Physiotherapy Assistant

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven physiotherapist assistant to join the specialist learning disability team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. We are a highly motivated team of physiotherapists that provides services to adults with a learning disability across the boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.
You would work with the physiotherapy team to manage a varied case load of people with learning disabilities who will have a range of physical disability. You would be implementing and progressing their physiotherapy programmes in a number of community settings, including the people’s home, day cares, residential or other settings. This will include the delivery of specialist therapeutic modalities such as rebound therapy, movement groups and hydrotherapy. You would have a key role in supporting the general administrative tasks of the physiotherapy team including the organisation and co-ordination of the team’s activities and clinics.
You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team comprising occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and community learning disability nurses and will work closely with care networks, day services, psychology and social care agencies.
Experience of working with this people with a learning disability is desirable but not essential.

Learning disability physiotherapistsprovide specialist assessment, treatment and management to adults with a learning disability whose needs cannot be successfully met by mainstream services, even when reasonable adjustments are made. Physiotherapists will work in collaboration with the person, their network of care, mainstream health services, and the multidisciplinary team to enhance, optimise and maintain the person’s physical presentation, function and quality of life.
Job Summary
- To manage a caseload of adults with a learning disability delegated by the physiotherapy team.
- To implement and progress physiotherapy programmes delegated by the physiotherapy team.
- To work with service users in a range of community settings, including the service user’s home, day care, residential or other settings, as appropriate.
- To assist in the organisation and co-ordination of the physiotherapy teams activities and clinics.
- To support the physiotherapy team in carrying out general administrative tasks and undertake appropriate additional duties.

Clinical Responsibilities
- To contribute to the assessment, implementation and review of service user’s physiotherapy programmes.
- To undertake delegated physiotherapy programmes with service users, without direct supervision in order to achieve identified goals and agreed outcomes.
- To participate and deliver therapeutic activities such as rebound therapy and aquatic therapy (hydrotherapy) as delegated by the physiotherapy team.
- To progress physiotherapy programmes within boundaries previously agreed with the delegating physiotherapist.
- To be responsible for monitoring service users and their physiotherapy programmes during the period of intervention.
- To report any changes, in the service user’s health status or their participation/engagement with physiotherapy programmes, to the delegating physiotherapist.
- To seek timely advice and support as appropriate from the physiotherapy team or supervisors.
