An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Waste Monitoring Officer to join our dedicated hard working Estates and Facilities Department. We are looking for an focused individual with a professional attitude and dedication combined with experience in waste management to provide dedicated support to the waste function within the Estates and Facilities department.

The Waste Monitoring Officer will work closely with the Waste Manager, departmental leads and key stakeholders to ensure the delivery of an effective, efficient and compliant waste management service.

The role of the Waste Monitoring Officer is to monitor and audit the waste segregation and disposal standards across the Trust.

Undertaking waste auditing and monitoring exercises initialising waste audit tools based on HTM07-01 Safe Management of Healthcare Waste best practice guidance.

The role will also involve the monthly recharges for waste management services.

BCHC provide high quality community and specialist services within Birmingham and the West Midlands. We deliver over 100 clinical services, out in people's homes and in over 200 healthcare settings for adults, children, people with learning disabilities, those with rehabilitation needs and also dental services. 1. Act as a first point of contact to effectively communicate waste management information, handle waste management operational issues, queries and internal waste monitoring and problem solving where appropriate.

2. To carry out pre-acceptance waste audits which is a legal requirement for the Trust to undertake, with compliance issues to be reported to the Waste Manager for escalation where required.

3. Provide constructive feedback on audit findings including any remedial actions relating to waste segregation or shortfalls which could be difficult or contentious to staff.

4. To produce accurate written reports and analysing statistics to audited areas highlighting non-compliances and areas of good practice enabling any remedial actions to be undertaken for waste to agreed timescales and deadlines.

5. To provide advice, support and guidance to staff and clinical teams regarding waste compliance, containment, internal waste disposal/removal procedures and how to manage waste more effectively and actively.

6. Liaise with other departments and services arranging audit visits.

7. Identify and promote good practice in relation to waste segregation.

8. Maintain and produce comprehensive electronic waste management data through computer software packages to produce databases, documents and reports ensuring they are recorded, reviewed regularly in a timely manner.

9. Responsible for ensuring the production of waste in the patient environment is monitored and meets the highest possible standards achievable in line with the HTM07-01 Safe Management of Healthcare Waste.

10. Ensure the required infrastructure (including receptacles, labels and posters etc.) is appropriate for individual areas and is kept maintained.

11. Monitor waste storage areas, ensuring correct containment, segregation, postering, signage and tags are available and in use where required.

12. Problem solve and make judgments of complex facts regarding waste management when dealing with wards and departments.

13. Organise, plan and manage own workload on a day to day basis. Work is managed and will refer to the Waste Manager where appropriate for guidance.

14. Undertake compliance audits and survey in line with HTM07-01 Safe Management of Healthcare Waste.

15. Contribute to the implementation of new and revised documentation and guidance relating to monitoring performance of waste within the Trust.

16. To operationally monitor the external waste contractors delivery of service against the agreed specification and report any inconsistencies and variances in the service to the Waste Manager.

17. Assist the Waste Manager with educating and supporting staff on the importance of waste management including compliance, segregation of waste and waste related initiatives i.e. increasing the recycling across all sites to meet the criteria of the waste hierarchy.

18. Support the Waste Manager with the waste management training to staff and to produce materials to communicate waste messages across the Trust to support the training requirements.

19. Training staff on correct segregation of waste streams.

20. Share ideas on procedures and practices, improving waste management and support the Waste Manager with implementing waste projects, i.e. waste segregation, recycling and environment initiatives.

21. Draft improvement action plans for completed areas of noncompliance, ensuring actions are completed by predetermined deadlines.

22. Attend and contribute to meetings and where necessary undertake actions arising.
