London, United Kingdom The Natural History Museum Full time

**About Us**

We are a world-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre. We use the Museum's unique collections and our unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.

Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.

We employ 900 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.

**Diversity and inclusion matter to us.**

Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.

We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.

**About the role**

We are looking for an Interim Registrar - Collections to join our Registry team for a 14-month fixed term contract as Maternity Cover. The Registry is part of the Museum’s Science Directorate which holds overall responsibility to the Trustees for the care and management of the Museum’s Collections. This is an exciting time to be joining the team as we contribute to the delivery of two transformative programmes that will change how we manage and care for the collections. This role will work across the diverse collections held by the Museum and with a wide range of stakeholders that engage with the collections.

This role is critical to RECODE, one of the Museum’s priority projects looking to create a new custom-built collections management system and will be instructive in shaping the requirements for the system including templating, testing, and training. This will involve supporting a RECODE Registrar. As the Registry lead on collections documentation and process the role also works closely with the Collections Documentation Registrar: NHM Unlocked. The NHM Unlocked Programme will create a new science and digitisation centre at Thames Valley Science Park (TVSP) which is owned by the University of Reading. The new centre will include a large collections store and as part of this development, the Museum will be moving over a third of its 80 million specimens and Library and Archive collections.

Members of the Registry team are encouraged to be proactive with their own continuous professional development, with participation in the UK Registrars Group, Collections Trust, Institute of Art & Law, and other relevant events important in helping us to understand other perspectives, emerging best practice, and think about new ways of approaching policy and process challenges at the Museum.

**About you**

A museum professional you will have experience of working at an accredited museum or gallery in a role which has a particular focus on documentation and collections management (including using collections management software and associated paper records). You will have developed written processes to be used by a museum or gallery to manage their collections and implemented collecting management standards and procedures to ensure best practice. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, with a pragmatic approach to problem solving in your work and be able to operate collaboratively within different teams.

Thriving at the Museum: the way we work
We are proud to work at the Museum and have identified the qualities we all need to embody to reach our shared ambition. This sits alongside the Museum’s values and forms the framework for the way we work.
