**Location**:
UKHSA offers hybrid working for its employees - this means that whilst the role will be based in one of our UKHSA offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business need and in line with departmental policy.
Some business travel will be required to other UKHSA offices. Business travel between base location and any other UKHSA offices will be covered under the UKHSA Travel and Expenses policy. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.
**Job description**:
The post holder will be based at UKHSA RCE Environmental Epidemiology Group (EEG) and will be managed by the Environmental Epidemiology Group Leader. The post holder will take lead roles in maintaining and improving surveillance systems. S/he will also lead on the ongoing development and improvements to the national Environmental Public Health Surveillance System (EPHSS).
The post holder will oversee all aspects of information and data management to support surveillance and epidemiological investigations, including in relation to extreme events as well as ongoing chronic exposure to chemical and environmental hazards, providing expert advice on data collection, storage, use and information governance and quality.
They will develop surveillance systems (where appropriate) and evaluate existing surveillance systems through audit.
The post holder will contribute to scientific papers on public health surveillance, clusters/outbreaks and non-communicable disease control through the analysis of datasets with appropriate methodology to support research.
**Key Responsibilities**:
Responsible for the day-to-day management of the information function within the Environmental Epidemiology Group including the line management of information staff.
Cluster and outbreak support and epidemiological investigation
- Oversee the information and data management to support a cluster or outbreak or epidemiological investigation
- Provide expert advice on information governance aspects of information management and response
Surveillance
- Identify surveillance needs within Environmental Public Health Tracking and EPHSS
- Develop and oversee surveillance systems (where appropriate) and advise on information management and governance issues
- Analyse and interpret surveillance data, developing automated routines and solutions
Research
- Advise on the information governance aspects of a study database
- Contribute to scientific papers on public health surveillance, clusters, outbreaks and environmental public health
Statistical skills
- Translate statistical processes in to automated solutions where appropriate
Software skills
- Use common statistical/database/mapping/web tools such as Stata, R, ArcGIS, network analysis, SQL, SharePoint etc. in routine reports, surveillance activities and the development of solutions
- Undertake complex analytical and programming tasks using common and specialist software packages to support data extractions, analysis and validation
Communication and Strategic thinking
- Present at scientific conferences, programme area meetings and other fora.
- Teach colleagues on all aspects of data, information management and governance and develop teaching material and courses.
