**About the role**:
With over 2500 train services on a daily basis, it’s important to ensure the safe and efficient operation of our train services with the Northern network.
As the Control Team Leader, you’ll take responsibility for supporting the Duty Control Manager in leading the Control Team. From absence management to supporting the team with their real-time investigation of incidents, you’ll provide support, guidance and direction to the Control Team.
You’ll lead by example, being proactive in supporting and mentoring the team perform their duties so train services remain functioning in times of emergency, safeguard passenger safety and minimising disruption. You’ll also show a readiness, to ensure contingency plans are in place, encouraging the team to have the confidence to think of solutions where required to keep our trains and customers moving. As well as being part of negotiation discussions with Network Rail Controls to minimise disruptions.

**Key responsibilities**:
As the Control Team Leader, you can expect a role that will be challenging, rewarding and different on a daily basis. Here’s a snippet of what your day-to-day activities could look like:
- Team Leadership: Assisting the Duty Control Manager in leading a team of Controllers, responsible for managing Northern services in real time.
- Safety First: Taking into consideration the impact of safety for Northern's services, passengers and employees at all times.
- Real-Time Management: Lead the real-time tactical management of Northern services, optimizing workforce plans and trains to meet performance and quality specifications.
- Network Coordination: Negotiate with Network Rail Controls to ensure smooth pathing of Northern services during disruptions and track access agreements.
- Performance Monitoring: Leading and challenging the real-time performance investigation process to minimize service disruption and report incidents as necessary.
- Fleet Management: Manage the Northern fleet in real time, ensuring units are allocated effectively and presented for maintenance as required.
- Alternative Transport: Coordinate tactical decisions to allow for the implementation of Northern's alternative transport policy when necessary.
- Training: Provide training and mentorship to new team members.

You will be a proactive and inspiring leader, possessing a remarkable combination of skills and attributes that will help you lead a team. These will include strong reasoning skills, problem solving, innovative thinking and the ability to identify opportunities for change. You should be a strong team player with the ability to influence and motivate others. You’ll be able to demonstrate your ability to engage with others by leading by example. You’ll possess strong communications abilities, enabling seamless coordination with various teams to ensure smooth train operations. Adept with making quick yet well informed decisions, you’ll excel in a high-pressure environment, demonstrating tenacity and resilience to get the job done right first time.
We’re also looking for the following:
- Proven people management skills and persuasive attributes
- Previous experience in logistics would be beneficial.
- To be able to work on your own initiative and as part of the Control Team
- Comprehensive geographical understanding of the Northern Network is desirable.
- Excellent communication skills with a strong focus on customer delivery
- Knowledge of the requirements of the Passenger Information During Disruption initiative is desirable.
It is also important that you will be willing to work shifts that cover early starts and late finishes, as well as weekends.
