The Senior Forester will lead on the active management of our woodlands and trees across the estate to allow our woodlands to function better for nature, people and carbon whilst ensuring safety compliance is met. We’re looking for someone who is passionateabout trees and their care to work with our Countryside team to shape the future of the woodlands at Kingston Lacy to enable delivery of ambitious nature recovery targets
What it's like to work here As the Senior Forester for Kingston Lacy, you’ll be joining our passionate team to become a voice of our landscapes, a conservation champion, and a lover of all things outdoors. You’ll be working with a driven and highly motivatedteam at the forefront of the National Trust’s ambitious nature recovery targets for Kingston Lacy.
The estate covers a total of 8,500 acres, and contains a huge variety of habitats from parkland, woodland, chalk downland and heathland and is crossed by miles of footpaths and bridleways. Woodland comprises more than 500 acres and is home to a range oftrees and woodland types. This encompasses everything from new plantations to mixed woodlands all the way through to historically and culturally important veteran trees.
What you'll be doing It will be your role to practically manage our woodlands and trees on the estate to a high standard. Working within the Countryside team you’ll implement the Forestry Commission approved Woodland Management Plan for the estate, activelymanaging these areas to meet set objectives and provide the best outcomes for nature and carbon. Delivery of the Tree Safety Management, including Ash dieback, across the estate and ensuring compliance with health and safety and UK Woodland Assurance Standardswill be a key element of your role. Monitoring the success of your activities, you’ll take responsibility for budgets, financial reporting and record keeping.
You’ll also support the planning and delivery of new woodland planting schemes, including an ambitious wood pasture creation project. You’ll have the opportunity to develop the forestry management skills through coaching and knowledge sharing. Working withstakeholders including local community, statutory bodies and funders, you’ll influence where necessary to ensure results are achieved. This is a dynamic, practical and hands on role with the unique and exciting opportunity to shape the future of the woodlandsat Kingston Lacy.
Who we're looking for We’re looking for a team player who is keen to share their passion and knowledge and can communication effectively with staff, volunteers, contractors and external partners. Self-motivation and good organisational skills will be importantfor managing work, deadlines and contractors.
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
- Practical arboriculture and woodland management, with experience of establishing new woodlands.
- Forestry operations and associated professional competencies.
- Capable managing contractors, timings of woodland operations and accurate record keeping.
- Tree Safety Management including surveys, inspections, associated permissions and record keeping.
- Passionate and experienced enhancing woodlands for nature conservation.
- Capable identifying and managing tree disease.
- Budgetary management experience.
- A full UK driving licence.
Please note this role will sit within the Countryside Team with line management by the Countryside Manager
