Maintenance Assistant Working Shifts

An exciting and excellent opportunity has arisen for a Maintenance Assistant to join the 5 person shift rota as part of the Estates Department at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, Cumbria. The shift rota is a 5 weekly rotation of first shifts (06:00 to 13:00), back shifts (13:00 to 20:30), night shifts (20:30 to 06:00) and one week in five off. The post holder will be required to provide shift cover for annual leave and sickness of colleagues. This is an Agenda for Change band 3 position with unsociable hours enhancements averaged out over the year.

The Shift Maintenance Assistant role is to undertake maintenance, repairs, minor improvement and capital work across the Trust as directed, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.

Outside of normal working hours the Shift Maintenance Assistants are required to carry out their work unsupervised but backed up, in an emergency, by an engineer who is on-call. As well as their own work they will be responsible for answering calls on the radio and pager with new work and prioritise their work load accordingly.

Shift Maintenance Assistants may need to work with some aspects of the electrical and mechanical trades; including power distribution, lighting, fire detection systems, standby generator plant and nurse call systems, a wide range of engineering plant and equipment including plumbing and sanitary systems, water systems, air conditioning plant, building control and automation, compressor and medical gas systems, emergency joinery works such as repairs to smashed windows and repairs to damaged doors and to the unblocking and repair of ward bedpan disposal machines.
