Based in the Science Division of the HSE at our science and research centre in Buxton, Derbyshire, this vacancy is for scientist in the field of psychology join our Human Factors team in the Risk and Human Factors Group. You will help maintain our role as a leading provider of health and safety solutions to industry and government, nationally and internationally.

We use applied science to underpin and inform pragmatic guidance and advice to meet the current and future needs of industry. The scope of our work requires a diverse range of expertise.

This breadth of expertise underpins our particular strength in creating multidisciplinary teams to support major incident investigations and policy development, as well as undertaking research and providing consultancy support.

You will be part of a team of Ergonomics, Human Factors and Psychology specialists and your work will require collaboration with a range of other technical discipline specialists, as well as Policy and Regulatory colleagues.

**Job description**:
Your role will involve:

- Researching to provide expert advice to a range of internal and external stakeholders on key industrial human factors issues such as:

- Workplace stress management;
- Workplace mental health;
- Safety culture;
- Leadership;
- Behaviour change and influence;
- Fatigue and shift work;
- Human performance;
- Competence;
- Actively supporting the development of research and consultancy work with industry by engaging with potential customers, providing quality technical content to proposals and presenting technical solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Supporting the delivery of training courses and presentations to the public and private organisations.
- Writing clear, high quality, reports that are suitable to be made available to the public, used by policy colleagues, shared with industry or used as evidence in regulatory action.

**Although the role is based in the HSE Science and Research Centre in Buxton, to meet project needs, some travelling within the UK is expected, including overnight stays.**

As part of your role you will:

- be required to support delivery of projects at various stages and eventually plan and deliver projects from inception through to completion, working increasingly independently and take joint responsibility for your workload with your line manager;
- receive technical and project management support from colleagues, as you develop topic knowledge and skill in techniques;
- be encouraged to build a network of useful contacts within the wider organisation, and in industry;
- actively engage in your own development and maintain a CPD log in accordance with any professional membership body.

**Person specification**

You must be able to demonstrate:

- A good understanding of work psychology related research methods (including qualitative and quantitative research approaches), ideally including practical experience of data gathering, analysis and reporting.
- Experience of contributing to high quality projects safely and to time.
- The ability to respond to calls to support site visits across the UK.
- The ability to work well both independently under supervision, as well as part of a team, enabling you to collaborate effectively, maintain positive professional working relationships, engage with others at all levels both within HSE and with external collaborators and stakeholders.
- Technical communication skills, including the ability to write clear, concise reports and present results and engage with stakeholders; this will in time include public speaking engagements, delivering conference presentations, training courses, etc.
