Personal Assistant for a Young Man with Autism & Learning Disabilities (Full-time)
£14.70 per hour | 36 hours per week | Selby, North Yorkshire | Direct Payments
Are you calm, reliable and confident in supporting someone whose world works differently?
We’re looking for an experienced and emotionally resilient support worker to join a small, skilled team supporting a young man with autism, learning disabilities, and behaviours that can challenge. He lives in his own flat with full-time support in place and thrives on calmness, structure and trust.
⸻
The Role
This is a full-time position, working 36 hours per week on a 2-week rolling rota, with 12-hour shifts (08:00-20:00)and alternate weekends.
You’ll be paid £14.70 per hour, funded via Direct Payments.
A second team member covers 11:30-16:30 Monday to Friday, enabling 2:1 community access during that period. Your role spans the full day, providing morning, evening, and background support across the client’s routine.
⸻
About the Client
The client is non-verbal but highly expressive, using words and phrases with strong emotional meaning like “Crispie red” (red packet crisps), “Biscuit blue,” or “Scarborough.” He has an excellent memory and forms strong connections to routines and familiar places.
He can speak certain words and names but does not understand conversation. Asking “How are you?” would not make sense to him — but picking up keys and saying “Go Town?” might spark recognition and excitement.
He is often calm and content, but when overwhelmed (sometimes by unclear triggers), he may scratch or lash out physically. These behaviours are distress responses — not aggression — and your role is to support him through them using consistent, respectful care.
⸻
What You’ll Do:
- Morning & personal care: Support the client to get up, washed, dressed, and ready for his day.
- Household tasks: Keep his entire flat, sensory room and car clean and tidy; complete laundry, ironing, and meal prep.
- Outings (2:1 support): Assist another team member during 11:30-16:30 with daily community access — typically a drive-through meal followed by a quiet countryside walk.
- Evening routine: Prepare and serve the client’s evening meal, complete end-of-day tasks, and ensure a calm handover to the night staff who arrive at 20:00.
- Behavioural support: Help maintain emotional regulation using clear routines and low-arousal responses during challenging periods.
⸻
Who This Role Would Suit:
You must:
- Have experience working with autistic individuals
- Hold a full, clean UK driving licence
- Be able to drive confidently (including a Motability vehicle)
- Have the right to work in the UK (sponsorship is not available)
- Have 2+ years’ experience in care, support or a relevant setting
- Be physically capable of supporting someone when distressed
- Be calm, reliable, and consistent — especially during emotionally intense moments
- Be available for 12-hour shifts, alternate weekends, and a 2-week rolling rota
⸻
Support & Progression
You’ll be employed via Direct Payments, supported by an experienced care lead (Neil) and the client’s family. Full training will be provided. The role will transition in future to a CQC-registered provider, with full TUPE protection of your hours, rights, and pay.
⸻
What You’ll Receive:
- £14.70 per hour
- 36 hours per week
- 12-hour shifts (08:00-20:00) on a 2-week rolling rota
- Alternate weekends off
- Enhanced DBS (paid for)
- Casual dress and free on-site parking
- Full training and induction
- A consistent, meaningful role making a genuine difference
⸻
If you’re steady, caring, and confident working with people with complex needs — we’d love to hear from you.
