**JOB SUMMARY**: The role of Sales Assistant is to provide staffing for the shop and to give greater support for the Shop volunteers.

**Rate of Pay**:£12.21 per hour

**Hours of Work**:Paid 12 hours per week which will be worked over 2 week shifts of one week working 13 hours and one week working 11 hours

**Annual Leave**:25 days paid leave per leave year pro rata. This is exclusive of public holidays.

**St Edmundsbury Cathedral Enterprises Limited** is made up of The Cathedral Shop, The Tourist Information Point and Pilgrim’s Kitchen (café/restaurant) and our external events facilities. Enterprises, the trading ‘arm’ of the Cathedral, exists to assist in meeting the needs of the visitors and to increase revenue to the Cathedral. The Shop’s work is assisted by a dedicated team of volunteers, who are part of the Cathedral’s Guild of St Edmund.

The Cathedral Shop is a vital part of the Cathedral’s ministry to visitors. Its aim is to provide a range of merchandise for sale in order to generate financial income for St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Through its sales it also seeks to educate visitors about the Cathedral, its mission, and to enhance the Cathedral’s reputation. The Shop is open Monday to Saturday 10.00am to 5.00pm and 11.30am to 4.00pm on Sundays. About 25% of all Cathedral visitors make use of the Shop.

Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the Shop. Currently we aim to have two volunteers on duty in the Shop on a rota basis but this is not always possible. The volunteers’ role is to be the first point of contact with the customers and to encourage sales. They also play a vital role in welcoming visitors and providing a point of information about the Cathedral and its community. As the Shop developments are implemented the current volunteers need to be kept informed of proposed changes.

St Edmundsbury Cathedral is a lively and exciting place in which to work. The completion of major building works has seen the Cathedral grow in size and activity and the place has become busier. The extraordinary variety of people who are associated with the Cathedral and the remarkable diversity of the events which take place here mean that there is much to capture the imagination of the Cathedral’s employees, much to be done, and much to enjoy.

The Cathedral Staff is made up of a Dean, two Residentiary Canons and 32 employees (fulltime equivalent) including an Administrator, musicians, vergers, administrative and financial staff, Events, PR, Visits and Volunteers staff, Children’s Education staff and Enterprises staff. The Cathedral has over 300 volunteers contributing in a wide variety of ways. A typical Sunday sees 350 people attending the various services.

**SAFEGUARDING**

All staff and volunteers are expected to demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding the welfare of all children and adults who may be vulnerable, who are involved with and/or visit the Cathedral. This will include adherence to policies and procedures, following good practice in relation to their own behaviour and conduct and undertaking any safeguarding duties commensurate with their specific role.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- To work collaboratively with the Enterprises Retail Manager and colleagues.
- To ensure the smooth running of the Shop to include opening and closing of the shop.
- To ensure that the Shop provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere to Cathedral visitors in line with the Cathedral’s mission to serve both its members and the community at large.
- To ensure the Cathedral Shop provides a high quality and attractive public image, competitive with any similar retail outlet.
- To deputise for the Enterprises Retail Manager in their absence.
- To work with and oversee the team of volunteers, whose support is essential to the profitability of the enterprise and whose involvement represents part of the life of the Cathedral community.
- Ensure arrangements made for cash floats at opening, cashing up at close of business, till operation and all aspects of cash control are maintained.
- To greet visitors, serve customers and answer enquiries.
- Responsible for taking deliveries
- To have excellent product knowledge and assist with processing stock, reordering and restocking.
- Ensure the shop is kept clean and tidy and that standards are maintained.
- To undertake professionally and appropriately any other duties reasonably requested.
