Church Engagement Officer, Northern Ireland

Job description
Welcome Churches’ vision is for every refugee to be welcomed by the local church. We do this by equipping and resourcing churches to welcome refugees and people seeking asylum to their local community and by profiling them on our national Welcome Network. Over the past eighteen months, our Welcome Network of refugee-welcoming churches has grown to over 1,100 churches across the UK and this number is increasing every month. In August 2021, we responded to the urgent need to help welcome newly-arriving Afghans in the UK. We have been able to connect over 4,000 Afghans with their local church and provided training to over 500 individuals from local churches to be ready to welcome them. We are continuing to support churches as they offer friendship and support to thousands of Afghans still in hotels. We are also supporting Ukrainians and the churches hosting and welcoming them and have provided training to over 400 individuals, alongside our Ukraine Hub of key resources and regular Connect meetings. We work extensively with churches offering support to hotels housing people seeking asylum, providing training and resources.
In addition to responding to urgent needs, we have a number of projects which churches can run. We provide a variety of training and resources to churches to support, disciple and include refugees in all aspects of church life. Our Welcome Boxes project provides a way for churches to welcome newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers proactively in their location. Another of our newer projects, Welcome Homes, connects compassionate homeowners with refugees in need.
We are at a pivotal moment as a charity as demand for our work is growing exponentially all across the UK and we aim to provide consistent and high quality support to churches in our Welcome Network. In Northern Ireland we have seen particular growth with the number of churches in our Network growing from 9 to 60 churches this last year, with growing partnerships with key stakeholders. This role will particularly focus on building on this foundation, engaging with churches not yet in the Network and especially those who are in areas where refugees and people seeking asylum are living. It includes engaging with churches and other refugee-related organisations across Northern Ireland; supporting and equipping churches to welcome newly-arrived Afghan families in Northern Ireland, and delivering Welcome Churches training to churches and engaging with churches not yet in our Welcome Network.
The Northern Ireland Coordinator will be based in Belfast and would be suitable for a self-motivated leader with knowledge and experience of supporting refugees and asylum seekers at a local level. You should be able to relate well with church leaders of all backgrounds and work professionally in local partnerships across organisations supporting refugees and asylum seekers. We are a highly-committed team who work collaboratively to support one another.
Applicants are required to have an active Christian faith and be passionate about the UK Church welcoming refugees into the church community. Applicants from a refugee background are strongly encouraged to apply.
