An exciting opportunity has become available within the Surgery and Critical Care Group for a substantive Consultant in Breast. This post will be based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. Clinical sessions within the job plan will be on all three sites so travel time will be built within the job plan.
There is no on-call commitment but the post holder may be approached for advice on emergency patients and should support the General Surgeons with the management of these.
Post-operatively the post holder should be available for contact by the ward in case of complications and should liaise with the General Surgery on-call team when necessary to facilitate patient care.
The post holder will undertake 10 PA's (7.5 DCC's, 1.5 SPA and 1 PA for admin).
The post holder will be supported by the Breast Clinical Team which includes 3 Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons, 3 Middle Grade Doctors, including deanery traineeswith ward support from FY doctors and nurse practitioners.
UHMBT has strong ties with Lancaster University and offer great opportunities to get involved with teaching medical students and with research.
We are therefore delighted to offer this great opportunity for a Breast Consultant to take up this post working in a highly successful, modern department delivering outstanding results in a breathtakingly beautiful part of England.
Arrangements for a visit to the Breast Department can be arranged on request.
- Provide outpatient new & review clinics including two week wait, cancer results and treatment planning/consenting, and follow up
- Preparation of patients for theatre and post-operative care
- Play a lead role in the clinical management of patients
- Participate in the breast cancer MDTs
- Participate in clinical audit & demonstrate evidence based practice where appropriate
- Completion of discharge summaries is mandatory for all patients within 48 hours
- Initiate and be involved in service developments in their areas of special interest and in line with the Trust’s vision
- Comply with Trust policies and complete mandatory training
- Use Trust systems as directed (eg paperless clinics, e-outcomes, Lorenzo)
- Actively participate in continuing medical education
- Undertake and participate in the appraisal process, job planning as part of revalidation.
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
