Youth Mentor

EPIC Youth is a Community Interest Company working with Children & Young People in North Somerset and Bristol. Our aim is to empower young people in their communities by delivering a range of positive activities, encompassing learning and volunteering opportunities.

With the increasing focus on young people’s mental health EPIC Youth has created a role for a youth mentor for 15 hours a week. Opportunity is available for additional evening club based work for up to three sessions.

Key accountabilities of the mentoring role
- You will become a mentor to individuals and act as a role model. This role is pivotal for signposting mentees to further appropriate mental health services and support in the case of more complex cases.
- You will deliver in a range of environments including 1:1 sessions, group sessions and open access, self referral. This will include identifying the needs of the children and young people in the local community and tailoring the range of support services to reflect this.
- You will be required to work with a range of professional including youth support workers, school staff and other local organisations as part of a multi-professional approach for the benefit of the children and young people.
- You will be expected to work with parents/guardians and families to ensure that children and young people are supported as best as possible. Each individual case will require initial assessment, monitoring and evaluation and a well planned exit strategy from specific support.

**Qualifications**

Essential

Psychology or other related degree in Health/Social Care/Youth Work undergraduate degree

Desirable

Other relevant postgraduate degree

**Work Experience**

Essential

Evidence of working with children and young people with mental health difficulties and from the LGBTQ+ community

Ability to manage own caseload and time

Demonstrates high standards in written communication and report writing

Desirable

Experience of working in Mental Health support services or other related sector

**Knowledge and skills**

Essential

Computer literate and proficient in the use of Office 365

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Able to develop positive relationships with young people.

Demonstrates an understanding of children and young people’s mental health and how it may present

Understanding of the importance of and experience of using evaluative tools to measure and monitor young people’s progress

Demonstrates knowledge regarding essential services available for children and young people locally

Desirable

Willing to give anything a go and able to adapt to changing environments and situations

Demonstrates an understanding for the need to use evidence-based psychological methods to support young people

Demonstrates a knowledge of the current issues relating to children and young people and the impact they have on mental health

Demonstrates the ability to keep up to date with research relating to young people and mental health support interventions

Willing to work outside of usual office hours (evenings and weekends) to meet the needs of children and young people.

Key accountabilities of the role
- To ensure that the work reflects the services' commitment to equal opportunities.

- To assist with the preparation and administration of the project where appropriate.
- To work as a team member and take ownership of achieving project aims and outcomes, ensuring targets are reached within the stated timeframe.

- To carry out other such duties as are required and as are commensurate with the grade of the post.

This post will be funded as follows: 15 hours a week for six months for youth mentor, there is potential to extend this role if further funding becomes available. The rate of pay for of the role is £10.00 per hour.
