Job Introduction
Wales Live has a really exciting opportunity for a senior journalist reporter passionate about breaking stories to help set the agenda in Wales and beyond. We have a broad remit covering politics and current affairs, and it’s a brilliant chance to pursue your own ideas and stories and bring them to air. The programme seeks to puts the viewer at the heart of stories and how policy affects them, as well as analysing the most important issues of the day. All of our content is original and unique. We pride ourselves on being creative about how we tell and film stories.
Main Responsibilities
- Propose; research; write; report and edit interesting and well-explained reports and more thoughtful, analytical pieces for publication - meeting high journalistic standards and fully observing the BBC editorial guidelines.
- Extensive knowledge of Welsh politics and current affairs
- Experience of live broadcasting including live breaking news with a good on-screen presence, self-assured microphone voice and ability to communicate effectively to target audience. A knowledge of and aptitude for using multimedia technology.
- Generate and produce unique, agenda-setting content for Wales Live, delivering this to other outlets across the newsroom
- Alert editors to breaking news and be ready to file accurate, on-the-spot reports and present, as soon as possible. Check and advise against coverage when necessary.
- Develop and use all formats and platforms available to tell the story in the most appropriate way, with a particular focus on social media to deliver our journalism to audiences.
- Supply items for the news diary, coming up with a stream of realistic coverage ideas and working jointly with other BBC reporters and producers in the field/region.
- To gather material for broadcast on news topics and events which is reflective of the audiences we serve.
- To provide timely, specialist and self-assured news coverage and analysis of news and events of interest to the audiences of the BBC.
- Maintain regular and clear communication with the Editors ensuring everyone is briefed on own movements and contact numbers at all times throughout the assignment.
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy
We are looking for a Senior Journalist Reporter to generate story ideas that make an impact and travel across platforms. You'll be working as part of a small team reporting to the Assistant Editor, Specialist Journalism, and will be expected to come up with agenda-setting ideas, flagging and considering editorial policy and legal issues when they arise. You will be equally as comfortable talking to members of the public from all backgrounds about important issues, as you are putting their experiences to the politicians making the decisions which affect them. You will produce packages for the programme, and will be expected to provide live analysis when appropriate. You will also be expected to deliver your stories across digital, radio and daily TV output - making as great an impact as possible. Wales Live has an excellent track-record in producing digital content which has brilliant reach, and you’ll be expected to think creatively about how to continue this with bespoke digital content for your stories. You’ll be very familiar with the BBC’s editorial guidelines and values and passionate about upholding them.
