Orthopaedic practitioner, Band 5
The post holder is required to undertake a wide range of tasks in support of clinical professionals, including activities directly related to patient care.
He/she will provide specialised splints for the paediatric inpatients and outpatient department, Hand management unit, medical patients, diabetic patients and burns and plastics patients.
He/she provides support in the development and implementation of effective programmes of care for efficient operation of all sessions. He/she is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and will be required to supervise staff and assist in staff training and development
The post includes deputising for the senior orthopaedic practitioner.

Clinical responsibilities
- To work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team providing specialist practical skills and theoretical knowledge across a range of work procedures and practices in accordance with BOA/RCN (SOTN/AOT) casting techniques/standards.
- o be able to undertake the construction and fitting of a range of routine and complex casts. including cast braces/Focus rigidity casting/all advanced bracing work
- To assist A&E medical staff with patients requiring manipulation of various fractures
- To collaborate with occupational therapists/hand therapists to design and produce bespoke splints
- To ensure that all patients requiring casts or further work to existing casts are treated promptly and if applicable, not delay patient discharge.
- To triage patients with cast problems and deal with or refer as appropriate.
- To attend elective T&O lists as and when requested by the orthopaedic surgeons.
- To check wounds and dressings without supervision and redress appropriately.
- To remove sutures from patients
- To remove casts and discharge patients from the fracture clinic without further referral when instructed to do so by the consultant.
