Head Gardener

Working in one of the best-preserved gardens of the Georgian period, originally designed as a high-tech hub of horticultural innovation and design, you’ll ensure that the gardens are maintained to the highest standard.

Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a wide variety of plants and horticultural techniques, you’ll oversee and develop practical horticultural projects to enhance and conserve the site. Developing hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as propagation, vegetable and fruit production and herbaceous border management - you’ll also manage the tree collection within the Pleasure Grounds.

What you'll be doing:You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day management and development of the Garden at Llanerchaeron and Dinefwr, with oversight of other sites in the Carmarthenshire & Ceredigion portfolio.

You’ll ensure that we maintain the highest standards of conservation, horticulture and visitor experience, and enable us to develop the Garden in such a way that it provides continuing and renewed interest whilst retaining the sense of place and of history.

You’ll line manage an experienced team of Gardeners at Llanerchaeron and lead the garden volunteers, helping them to make the most of their time here. And you’ll interact with our visitors, answering their questions, supporting gardening workshops and tours and setting up events when needed.

Who we're looking forTo be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the following:

- Trained as a professional gardener/horticulturalist to RHS Level 3 or equivalent, with significant practical experience.
- Leadership skills including coaching, team development, motivation and communication.
- Have proven practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as a strong knowledge of plants and horticultural techniques.
- An eye for artistic planting and design skill with knowledge and understanding of the conservation of historic landscapes.
- Good people skills, enabling strong relationships to be built and maintained, externally and internally.
- Experience of managing operational risk, including how to assess and manage risk effectively. Knowledge of all Health and safety and compliance requirements relevant for horticulture.
- Good written and verbal communication skills including public presentation, influencing and negotiating.
