The Haematology Clinical team is based within the footprint of the Pathology laboratories at Dorset County Hospital, which include departments of Histopathology and Cytology, Blood Sciences (combined Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories) and Microbiology. The management arrangements within the department conform to the principles of the strategic review of pathology services.
The Robert White Centre opened at the end of October 2018 and houses Haematology and Oncology clinics. It also houses 2 new linear accelerators which provide radiotherapy treatment on site at DCH for the first time. The Chemotherapy unit is currently undergoing a £2.5m investment in facilities to enhance patient experience. Fortuneswell ward is a 17 bedded ward with haematology, oncology and General medicine beds including two protective isolation beds and 3 other side rooms.
The department provides clinical and laboratory haematology and transfusion services to all hospitals in West Dorset and to general practitioners.
The postholder is expected to run outpatient clinics and ward rounds according to an agreed job plan. They will provide clinical and laboratory advice to medical and nursing staff within the hospital as well as health professionals in primary care in collaboration with the other consultant haematologists. The post holder will be required to assist in the prompt interpretation of the findings.
The post holder must have a general haematological knowledge and be able to deal with all haematological problems; with an opportunity to subspecialise. The post holder should have an interest in clinical trials and would have the opportunity to work with the research department to set up a portfolio of clinical trials.

The post holder will assume full clinical responsibility for the care of patients admitted under the arrangements within general medicine inpatient provision, including a close liaison with consultant paediatricians in the provision of paediatric haematology services. The post holder is required to ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for cover of leave and off-duty periods. The internal cover when one consultant is away is to be cross covered by other consultants.
To be available on-call by arrangement with consultant colleagues to ensure continuous consultant supervision is provided with the haematology laboratory at all times, and for assistance with clinical pathology problems of consultant and junior medical staff out of hours within his/her own competence.
To be available in the laboratory outside normal hours when this is judged to be necessary on professional grounds, particularly in the case of major accidents and catastrophes.
The anticipated fixed weekly programmed activities of the new appointee are 6 PA. The current number of PAs for Supporting Professional Activities is 1.5 per full time Consultant (1.00 PA pro rata for this post)
On Call is 1:4, with the anticipation of this being amended to 1:5 or 1:6 over the coming year.
**Job Plan**: To be finalised on appointment. Twice weekly clinic days are assigned but it is anticipated that regular clinics will be cancelled during the on-call weeks and consultant will run a “hot clinic” during this week for urgent patients and some chemotherapy patients. Fast Track patients should also be seen as adhoc patients on the Consultant of the week rota.
