As a Senior Electrical Engineer within Roads Development Division, which is part of Safety, Engineering and Standards Directorate, you will have a great opportunity to work in our team of Energy and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) specialists, providingtechnical direction and assurance for all highways electrical infrastructure on the Strategic Road Network.

You will be responsible for maintaining and developing policy, standards and best practice, as well as providing technical advice to those parts of the organisation responsible for delivery.

You will develop collaborative relationships with internal colleagues and external stakeholders and this will require occasional travel on a national basis. Although you will, initially, not have any direct reports you will have the opportunity to mentorcolleagues and manage supplier resources and contracts, including tasks on our Innovation Programme.

You will monitor developments in the industry and look for opportunities to utilise learning from other infrastructure providers, nationally and internationally. Building in every opportunity to ensure that our customers and colleagues get home safe andwell every day while travelling or working on our road network.

What you’ll be leading on
- Act as a source of specialist expertise in ITS, electrical design, renewable energy systems and energy storage; providing advice and guidance to National Highways operational delivery colleagues and suppliers. Actively engage with these stakeholders tounderstand their specialist electrical needs and identify key areas for improvement and sharing of best practice.
- Working in partnership with internal teams to support delivery of our Net Zero and Digital Roads plans you’ll; develop business cases, plans and supporting documentation for the team’s projects, inclusive of effective risk and issue management. Commissionand manage consultancy support to ensure delivery of project objectives to time, cost and quality requirements.
- Maintain and update the relevant sections of the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges (DMRB) and the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) to improve the way the Strategic Road Network is designed, built and operated.
- Support the review of departures from standards so we can ensure innovative, non-compliant, roadside technology and energy solutions are appropriately assessed.
- Represent National Highways on external technical committees, steering groups and at seminars and workshops, to contribute to the development of external standards, ensuring that National Highways views are appropriately represented.

To be successful
- Specialist ITS and electrical engineering expertise, you will have a relevant engineering qualification (e.g. BEng, BS, HND/HNC Foundation Degree) as well as membership of a relevant professional institute (e.g.IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology))and professional registration or working towards.
- Knowledge and experience of following national electrical installation legislation, standards, requirements and advice, especially the 18th Edition of the New Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
- Experience of using your specialist knowledge to support the development of policy / standards / specialist guidance.
- Experience of resolving complex technical problems, analysing information to develop appropriate solutions to manage risks and issues.
- Evidence of managing internal and external relationships to achieve desired outcomes, taking the lead when needed to achieve consensus when views / perspectives may differ.
- Knowledge of electrical energy management, including renewable energy and energy storage systems.
- Experience of working in a structured project and programme management environment [preferably APM (Association for Project Management) or equivalent] delivering successful projects and programmes
