Health and Safety Officer

**Overview**

Bader College, located at historic Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, is the overseas campus of Queen’s University, Canada. The campus occupies a 600-acre estate, including a range of academic, residential, and recreational facilities. Our dedicated academic faculty and support staff provide exceptional academic programming for undergraduate and postgraduate students from Canada and around the world. We also serve as a venue for international conferences and meetings. Our wholly owned trading subsidiary, Herstmonceux Castle Estate Limited, is responsible for running the gardens and grounds, corporate events, and other functions.

The Health and Safety Officer will report to the Head of Governance and Admin and will work closely with the Buildings and Facilities team to ensure that there is a culture of health and safety at Bader College. The Officer will ensure that we remain compliant and up to date with requirements and legislative change relating to health and safety requirements as well as making recommendations in relation to fire regulations, flooding risks, occupational diseases, and waste disposal.

The postholder will be required to demonstrate high levels of flexibility and the ability to work under their own initiative.

**Salary**: £35,000 per annum

**Working hours**: 37.5 hours per week - 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday (with one hour’s unpaid lunch break), but flexibility may be required in respect of health and safety issues arising.
- Main purposes of job_

To ensure that Bader College is compliant and up to date with all health and safety matters, including record keeping and to make recommendations for change in relation to health and safety, fire regulations, flood risk, occupational diseases and waste disposal.
- Main duties_
- Monitor work processes and procedures to identify unsafe practices or breach of safety regulations,
- Conduct equipment inspection to ensure they are correctly installed and operational,
- Facilitate and schedule repairs of unsafe or damaged equipment, buildings and other infrastructure,
- Organise safety training to educate company staff on necessary safety principles,
- Liaise with the buildings and facilities team and the estates team to ensure the site is safe for staff, students and other visitors to the site and liaison with relevant teams in planning off site trips,
- Develop and implement safety, procedures, and policies and ensure these are disseminated to all staff,
- Carry out investigations to identify the root cause of an incident or other unsafe conditions and take steps to mitigate the risks posed,
- Oversee the placement and setup of safety signs to warn of potential hazard,
- Prepare and present to company management periodic report of safety operations,
- Provide recommendations on safety topics such as proper waste disposal, fire regulations, and noise,
- Conduct risk assessments to identify work areas with high risk of operational hazard and checking external contractor compliance with relevant legislation and other regulations such as COSHH,
- Oversee company waste disposal methods to ensure they comply with safe disposal procedures,
- Review company operational processes to ensure they are in line with external safety legislation,
- Attend occupational safety and health seminars to update job knowledge and enhance their skills, and
- Any other duties that may reasonably be required.

- Qualifications_
- Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in risk management, engineering, safety management, or in a related discipline.
- Certification from recognized occupational health and safety body (including NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma)
- Skills and competencies_
- Strong verbal and written communication to enable dissemination of information to staff at all levels of the organisation
- Ability to compile and analyse complex information and create solutions to ensure the development of safe operational strategies to mitigate risks and minimise work place incidence
