**Job Title**: **Cover Supervisor**

**Responsible to**: **Cover Manager**

**General Work Pattern**: **8:30 am to 3.45 pm, 32.99 hours per week, 38.8 weeks per year (term time only).**

**Grade**: **NJC Grade D Scale points 8-12 (£24,702 - £26,421) pay award pending.**

**Principal Accountabilities**:

- To encourage effective learning through classroom cover for teachers and individual student support.
- To work under the guidance of teaching staff and within an agreed system of supervision; to implement lessons with individuals/groups in or out of the classroom including the supervision of whole classes during the short term absence of teachers.
- To undertake lesson cover, supervising whole classes during the absence of teachers, including registration periods. This will include:

- giving instructions for the lesson as provided by a teacher;
- maintaining good order and keeping pupils on task;
- responding to general questions and providing general feedback to teachers, recording and reporting as appropriate.
- To undertake exam invigilation as required.
- To undertake supervisory duties as required when not covering for an absent teacher, either with individuals or small groups.
- To support designated pupils/colleagues/teams as required when not needed for cover duties.

**Main Duties**:
**Key Function 1: General Duties**
- Collect and study cover work for assigned lessons. Seek any clarification necessary from the teacher setting the work or Head of Department.
- Follow whole school systems and procedures during lessons for classroom management and lesson structure.
- Arrive promptly to cover lessons.
- Ensure orderly entry to the room and check that students are properly dressed and equipped to start the lesson.
- Check attendance.
- Give instructions on work left by the absent teacher or Head of Department to the class, both verbally and visually, and state the learning aims of the lesson.
- Arrange the distribution of resources required.
- Collect completed work after the lesson and return it to the appropriate teacher.
- Ensure that the room is tidy and dismiss students in orderly fashion at the correct time.
- For any reason you are not required to cover, carry out subsidiary tasks/roles agreed with the Cover Manager (e.g. support in lessons, small group work, team support, admin assistance).

**Key Function 2: Support for Pupils**
- Supervise pupils engaged in learning activities, assisting and encouraging them.
- Establish productive working relationships, acting as a role model and setting high expectations of conduct and behaviour.
- Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom.
- Consistently support pupils whilst recognising and responding to their individual needs: show interest in their work and answer any queries where possible, using praise to help motivation.
- Keep pupils on task and respond to general queries.
- Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement.
- Set homework previously prepared by the teacher.
- Undertake planned supervision of pupils’ out of hours learning activities as required.
- Supervise pupils on trips, visits and out of school activities as required.

**Key Function 3: Support for the Teacher**
- Provide objective and accurate feedback to the teacher on the conduct of the lesson.
- Be responsible for keeping and updating records as agreed with the teacher, contributing to reviews of systems/records as requested.
- Administer routine/simple tests and invigilate exams/tests.
- Provide general clerical/administrative support.

**Key Function 4: Support for the Curriculum**
- To develop curricular knowledge as appropriate.
