Director of Welsh Blood Service

We are seeking a new Director for the service who will be an individual that recognises the unique features of the WBS as part of the NHS and is able to demonstrate great leadership to deliver our service modernisation and developments with a focus on our donors and NHS partners. You may be from a traditional NHS background or have experience in delivery in a pharmaceutical or commercial production or similar background.
The Director will report managerially to the Chief Operating Officer and is responsible for the strategic and operational delivery relating to the services provided by Welsh Blood Service, a division of Velindre University NHS Trust. They are responsible for leading the sustained development of the service so it is able to make the most of innovation, research and development opportunities. The post holder is accountable for the quality of the services delivered in accordance with the Trust objectives and the requirements of Welsh Government and any other regulatory bodies. The post holder will also be responsible for liaising with the Director of the Velindre Cancer Centre to ensure divisional alignment and development of the areas of mutual interest and collaborative working.
To lead, sustain and develop the Welsh Blood Service so as to ensure that it is positioned to respond to the rapidly changing developments of healthcare provision in Wales and the science and technology in blood and transplant science.
The Welsh Blood Service, a division of Velindre University NHS Trust is a key support service for the NHS in Wales, working with the people of Wales to enable them to make the life saving gift of a blood donation, processing, testing and distributing the resultant blood components to hospitals in Wales. The service also provides a range of other services to support solid organ and stem cell transplant services and hold the Welsh Bone Marrow Donor Registry which support Welsh donors to give their gift to patients in Wales, the UK and across the world.
The service also has a leadership role in blood transfusion in the NHS and works closely with health board colleagues on an operational day to day basis as well as in the delivery of the Blood Health Plan for Wales.
The service has two customers; the population of Wales that are our donors and the NHS organisations we support and their patients and has an ongoing programme of development across all aspects of the organisation. The delivery of the programme is a key objective for the Director. Research and development are also core to the service and there are a range of service development underway which will see considerable growth in the service in the next few years.
The post holder will also be part of the wider senior leadership team of Velindre University NHS Trust.
