In Greater Manchester, the governance and budgetary responsibilities for Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are significant roles held by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The Mayor, Andy Burnham, oversees the strategic direction and funding of these critical public services, ensuring they align with the broader goals of the region. The Deputy Mayor, Kate Green, plays a crucial role in maintaining the accountability of the police and fire services to the community. She engages with the public to gather their input on priorities, reflecting the democratic principle that such services should be responsive to the needs of the people they serve. Together, they determine the portion of council tax allocated to these services, balancing the need for safety and security with fiscal responsibility. This collaborative approach aims to foster a safe, transparent, and community-focused policing and fire service in Greater Manchester.
**The Role**:
The role is a dynamic and multifaceted position within the Police, Crime, Criminal Justice and Fire Team of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), focusing on enhancing the scrutiny and oversight of police custody.
The individual will work closely with the Principal for Policing and Communities to establish a robust scrutiny function, manage procurement, and formulate policies and procedures, taking full oversight of the scrutiny function.
Flexibility is key, as the job may require working outside typical hours to gain first-hand experience in police settings across the Northwest.
The ability to foster positive relationships with both internal teams and external partners, such as police, criminal justice entities, and elected officials, is crucial.
Additionally, the role involves drafting detailed correspondence and reports for the Deputy Mayor and senior management team, therefore an understanding of developments at various governmental levels is essential.
This role is pivotal in ensuring transparent and effective scrutiny of police custody.
**About You**:
Having a solid educational background or relevant experience is crucial in a dynamic team environment.
It's essential to possess strong interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships with colleagues, external organisations, senior staff. Political members and members of the public.
Experience in multi-agency collaboration, developing project plans, meeting tight deadlines, and drafting reports and official communications is highly valued.
Proficiency in Microsoft systems is a must, along with the willingness to learn new in-house ICT packages.
These competencies are the building blocks for a successful career in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.
