Can you see yourself advising communities and customers to maximise gains for the Natural Environment?
If this appeals to you, a career at Natural England offers rewarding opportunities to secure environmental improvements and play your part in creating a better future for people and nature.
The priority work Natural England is delivering includes:
- Establishing a Nature Recovery Network to help wildlife thrive
- Monitoring environmental changes to identify and help reduce the effects of climate change

- Advising on plans for new developments to maximise gains for nature
- Providing ways for people to better connect with nature, including green social prescribing
We are the Government’s advisor for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious vision which brings new opportunities to protect and enhance and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.
**About the Team**
This is an exciting opportunity to join Natural England’s National Nature Reserves (NNR) team in Cornwall. Based at Goss Moor NNR, the role will be part of a wider team that manage Natural England’s three NNRs in Cornwall. NNRs play an increasingly important role as places where people can connect with nature and contribute to the recovery of nature in the surrounding landscape.
Over the last decade Natural England has relied upon a grazing model where both animals and land have been leased to graziers. We have developed now to the point where Natural England will directly deliver the conservation grazing management across 630ha of Goss Moor NNR. This strategy is supported by a herd of 40 breeding Belted Galloway cattle, plus followers and 25 Dartmoor and Shetland ponies.
The breeding herd have been developed further to become Pasture for Life accredited, a member of a high health scheme and are a big part of a regenerative system being implemented at the base at Lower Penrose Veor farm.
Here, herbal leys are mob/tall grass grazed through the spring and summer, along with the principles of organic farming being followed. Fertility is the biggest target for the herd, with birth and weaning weights, plus cow/calf weaning efficiency being recorded to drive a low input herd suitable for the future of farming. The system is being developed further to lower the wintering costs by bale grazing hay.
