This is a really exciting time to join the MMO as we become an independent coastal state, embedding new repatriated functions and services with an increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment.
Working as part of the MMO’s Investigation and Enforcement Team you will act as the investigation lead in your allocated Coastal Team Area, or on occasion with national and international cases. You will be conducting investigations for suspected offending in areas the MMO has a regulatory responsibility for. These include, fisheries, nature conservation, marine licensing, wildlife, grant fraud.
In your role as Senior investigations Officer, you will oversee the completion of case files in line with criminal procedure rules and MMO investigative processes and policies. This will involve the completion of relevant case documents, presentation and collation of evidence and disclosure material as well as engagement with court process and sanction delivery. You will work closely with senior enforcement managers, coastal officers and the MMO Legal Team, to ensure that investigations are completed within timescales and to a high standard. You may also need to attend court hearings as necessary.
Conduct criminal investigations into suspected offences in accordance with national criminal procedural rules. Where necessary, gathering evidence in order to build prosecution files and conducting Criminal Evidence (PACE) interviews of suspects
- Working with MMO officers in the gathering of evidence, in conjunction with local managers
- Quality assurance of evidential material
- Ability to plan, prioritise and control workloads and deliver results to agreed timescales.
- Enhancement of investigative skill sets including the development of guidance within the MMO.
- Interpretation of marine environmental legislation Sound awareness of health and safety issues in relation to investigations, in particular searches and interviews.
- Involvement (after training) in the conduct of searches, surveillance and other operations as necessary and in accordance with PACE and Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA).

Essential
- Experience of marine environmental inspection processes and/or
- Experience in an investigations role and knowledge of the UK legal system.
Desirable
- Good knowledge of environmental protection regulatory regimes.
- Working as part of a team and collaboratively on cross-team projects.
- Some knowledge of the UK fishing and processing sector or of the Marine Environment.
- Worked as a warranted Marine Enforcement Officer or comparable environmental enforcement role.
