Casual Retail Sales Assistant

The Design Museum is the world’s leading museum devoted to contemporary design in every form from furniture to graphics, and architecture to industrial design. Our shops, including one online, sell a unique selection of classic, beautiful, new, and cutting-edge books, objects and gifts focusing on architecture, furniture and all aspects of design from graphic design to fashion, with every purchase supporting the Design Museum.

We are currently looking for 6 casual staff available to work weekends, bank holidays, early mornings and late evenings.

**Job scope**

Reporting to the Shops Supervisor and the Retail Manager, this public-facing role is responsible for serving customers in our three shops, as part of a small team.

Our shops offer a superlative range of products to mirror our collections and exhibitions, and you will relish the opportunity to communicate this message to our visitors in an engaging and well-informed manner.

Customer service and Shop Presentation
- Welcome and positively engage every visitor to the museum shops and consistently deliver the highest standards of customer service.
- Maintain high visual merchandising standards across all shops, following visual merchandising plans.
- Help exceed all retail sales targets in the shops through proactive interactions with our customers and rapid recall of product knowledge.

Shop operations
- Operate our EPoS system in a secure and efficient manner, including all elements of cash handling and opening/closing till procedures.
- Mitigate against stock shrinkage through remaining alert, ensuring stock is secured and reporting any losses to the management team.
- Maintain housekeeping standards, ensuring all stock, display equipment, and retail fixtures are clean and tidy, and that point-of-sale information is accurate and in pristine condition.
- Be fully aware of and actively promote our climate-conscious values to visitors.

Stock management
- Regularly replenish shopfloor displays, maintaining high standards of visual presentation, and assist with stock movement from the stockroom.
- Assist with deliveries, ensuring that stock is safely and neatly stored in the stockroom and that relevant paperwork is completed accurately and without delay.
- Help maintain the accuracy of the EPOS System by ensuring stock is processed correctly at the till, and that customer returns, write-offs, markdowns, price changes and supplier stock returns are administered according to retail guidelines.

**Person specification**

**Essential - Knowledge, Experience & Skills**
- Experience of working in a retail environment, or similar.
- Confidence and ability to proactively sell in busy environments and exceed targets.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with a passion for delivering great customer service.
- Good visual merchandising skills and excellent recall of product knowledge.
- Flexible approach to a range of retail tasks such as fulfilling online orders and stockroom duties.
- Team-spirited.

**Pay rate**: £14 + £1.69 holiday pay per hour

**Hours**:Variable week to week. We are seeking staff who are available to work weekends, evenings, and bank holidays.

**Location**: This role is based on-site at the museum.

**The casual arrangement operates in the following way**: the museum will contact you to notify you of potential opportunities to work. However, there is no obligation on the museum to offer work to you, and no obligation on you to accept such work as may be offered.
