Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner

The Bath Swindon and Wiltshire Bowel Screening Centre based at Salisbury District Hospital, is seeking to appoint a Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner to provide day to day leadership and oversight to our small team currently based across 3 sites - Salisbury District Hospital, Royal United Hospitals Bath and Great Western Hospitals, Swindon.

The bowel screening service addresses the needs of individuals aged between 55-75+ who have participated in a bowel screening test kit which and have an abnormal result.
- To provide leadership of clinical aspects for the provision of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) at the Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire Bowel Screening Centre.
- To manage the team of Specialist Screening Practitioners (SSPs), providing leadership and supervision.
- To liaise with the Screening Programme Manager, Clinical Lead and other members of the programme management team to provide co-ordinated care, addressing the needs of individuals arising as a consequence of the screening programme. Together this team manage the day to day operational matters of the Screening Centre.
- To manage health promotion activities with local health promotion services to improve access to screening by all sections of society.
- Work in partnership with PHE and Quality Assurance teams as well as the programme hub at Guildford.
- To lead clinical audit and benchmarking to improve clinical effectiveness and reduce colorectal mortality and morbidity.
- Ensure the provision of clinical representation for the Screening Centre at National and local meetings and screening events.

We work as a small team but have the challenge of being spread across several sites. We have dedicated administration, management and governance but some are based at sites other than Salisbury.

The Bath Swindon and Wiltshire programme has maintained the strict, high quality standards for bowel screening in the area that are required by the national programme.

We work flexibly where we can and focus on how we can achieve change and improve.

There is not always a training manual. While the national programme issues strict national guidelines to follow, these do not always fully specify how changes are to be carried out. It is up to the Screening Centre Management team, of which the post holder of this role is a key member, to develop methods appropriate to the local environment whilst adhering to the national guidance.

There is significant matrix working with the gastroenterology departments at the 3 sites.
