Hospital Play Specialist

Durham, United Kingdom North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust Full time

The Hospital Play Specialist is a person with expert knowledge and experience of hospital play, and who is a fully integrated member of the team. Through play, the Play Specialist will help to bridge the gap between hospital and home. They will provide interesting and stimulating play programmes for children (Aged between birth and adolescence) and their families in an effort to fulfil emotional, social and developmental needs, and help alleviate emotional trauma within families

Acts as a communication link with the other team members, including MDT, between the child and parents / carers.

Create awareness in all members of the MDT of the value of play and the emotional needs of the child in hospital.

Create an attractive child-oriented environment in which play occurs naturally at all times, by providing appropriate play activities for normal social, physical, cognitive and emotional growth. Set up the play areas and clear away.

Through play, help and familiarise the child and family with strange apparatus and procedures to reduce stress and anxiety and to help the child understand their illness. When appropriate, give assistance to a child undergoing painful procedures. This may include escorting a child to another department and the use of distraction techniques as appropriate.

At North Tees & Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust our main priority is, and always will be, to provide safe and high quality care to our patients every day; the kind of care we would want for ourselves and our loved ones. We want our organisation to be the best place to work with the right staff, in the right roles, at the right time, to ensure we deliver exceptional patient care and experience.

We will support staff through providing an inclusive and supportive workplace with health and well-being initiatives, staff benefits and opportunities for personal and professional development. Staff recognition is very important to us; as well as performance reviews and appraisals, we recognise staff through Star and Team of the month, colleague recognition - a note of thanks, Managers Awards, Shining Stars and Service Awards.

We recruit for values and “Together we are North Tees & Hartlepool”

Our team consists of Team Leads, Nurses, Heath Care Assistants, Hospital Play Specialists and Nursery Nurses who are motivated and passionate to ensure all care we deliver is Patient and Family centred, high quality and compassionate. You will see Multi-Disciplinary Team working at its best within our unit as we involve all allied health professionals to ensure the child receives the most appropriate care. We provide 24/7 care and work 11.5 hour shifts.
