**The Opportunity**:
As Head of Payroll and Service Improvement you will have overall responsibility for the Payroll service within the University (and for relevant subsidiary companies) as well as being the service lead on key projects designed to enhance, improve and develop core systems and processes in the Payroll and Pensions area. You will provide strategic and operational leadership and ensure that the highest levels of service are provided to our staff, students and key external stakeholders.

As well as leading the payroll function itself you will work closely with the Head of Pensions and the People and Money Service (who maintain and operate core systems) to ensure continued compliance with evolving legislative and policy requirements, drive system and process efficiency and ensure that the University is well sighted and briefed on Payroll related matters.

You will be an enthusiastic and motivational leader with experience of managing large and complex Payrolls, excellent knowledge of Payroll System design and have extensive awareness of pay-related issues, including Pensions. You will form and manage good relationships with key stakeholders (such as HMRC) and engage with sector representative groups to ensure that the University is delivering best practice where possible and is prepared for and able to deliver change.

Building key internal relationships is central as the University seeks to enhance services and drive efficiency whilst managing risk and meeting our statutory obligations.

**Your skills and attributes for success (extract)**:

- Educated to degree level, CIPP qualified to diploma level and have experience of payroll management in a large complex organisation or equivalent;
- Experience of managing a team and developing innovative solutions to problems and implementing consequent changes;
- Highly developed knowledge of payroll legislation, rules and arrangements;
- Well developed knowledge and understanding of Payroll / Pensions systems in the context of integrated ERPs in large complex organisation;
Ability to work to and meet multiple and tight deadlines, often concurrently Innovative approach to problem solving in a collaborative style.

It is expected that the post holder will be based primarily in Charles Stewart House, Chambers Street, Edinburgh, but the Finance Department is supporting hybrid working arrangements which support the needs of the University and immediate team, with details to be agreed with immediate line management.
