**Job summary**:
At the heart of all Royal Navy (RN) Communications activity is the RN brand which this hybrid post is tasked with protecting and promoting, both reactively and proactively. Working across RN-owned channels and key media influencers, the role includes advising on reputational risk, creating a positive news narrative and fielding media enquiries alongside the central Whitehall team, the Directorate of Defence Communications (DDC).

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

**Job description**:
Key tasks for the reactive news role (70%) include:

- Maintaining awareness of current affairs and news agendas (both online and offline) that may impact on the RN's reputation;
- Handling sensitive issues in a discreet and appropriate manner, only sharing information where necessary;
- Producing relevant and timely lines to take for emerging or policy issues;
- Storing cleared material in a team archive;
- Providing reactive media handling advice to DDC, outstations, senior officers, RN regional press officers, establishments and units;
- Building and maintaining a working relationship with key local and regional media outlets and defence specialists;
- Working with other teams in RN Comms, advising on areas of reputational risk within content or campaign planning; and
- Acting as RN Comms Duty Officer within the roster.

Key tasks for the proactive news role (30%) include:

- Liaising with DDC News team to ensure coherent messaging and maintain adherence to the broader Defence Communications Strategy;
- Providing pro-active media advice to DDC, outstations, senior officers, RN regional press officers and units;
- Creating engaging written content for outstations, senior officers, RN regional press officers, establishments and units; and
- Supporting RN media facilities and carrying out media minding duties where capacity allows.

The role will involve regular but not daily attendance in the Portsmouth office.

**Person specification**:
Essential experience:

- Strong verbal and written communication skills for a variety of media and formats
- Working with journalists (online/offline media)
- Background in media or press office environment

Highly desirable experience:

- Prior experience with HMG or Defence
- Experience of handling sensitive issues
- Experience of crisis management
