Rotherham, United Kingdom The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust Full time

The provision of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services for the Rotherham, Doncaster and Worksop area is delivered from the OMFS departments at Rotherham General Hospital and Mexborough Montagu Hospital, Doncaster. All acute operating and elective major operating takes place at Rotherham General Hospital. Day surgery services, outpatient Minor Oral Surgery operating, and outpatient clinics are delivered on both sites. The Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at Rotherham General Hospital treats the full spectrum of OMFS diagnoses.
The department treats a large volume of maxillofacial trauma, and in addition to the routine management of trauma, the consultants in the department are experienced in the use of up-to-date techniques such as orbital reconstruction using custom-made orbital implants, and the management of fractures of the mandibular condyle with endoscopically assisted fixation. Approximately 350 emergency cases are operated on in the department every year. Special interests within the department are head and neck cancer surgery, salivary gland surgery (including the management of salivary gland calculi using sialoendoscopy), orthognathic surgery, the surgical management of skin cancers of the head and neck, TMJ surgery and implant surgery. Patients with head and neck mucosal malignancy are diagnosed in the departments at Rotherham and Mexborough.
Minor Head and Neck cancer surgery is carried out at Rotherham, with all major Head and Neck cancer surgery operating carried out at the Head and Neck Cancer surgical centre at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. The Junior Clinical Fellow may have the opportunity to attend Head and Neck operating sessions at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital along with Mr Patterson, depending on timetabling and departmental requirements. The post is a fixed-term replacement post for the vacant Specialty Registrar position in the department, due to a vacancy in the training rotation. The post is based at Rotherham General Hospital.
The post is suitable for those in surgical training prior to OMFS Specialty training. It is appropriate for those seeking CREST accreditation. The post-holder would be required to provide support for the eight Dental Core Trainees in the department, as well as supporting the consultants and other members of the department. The post-holder would occupy the only senior training post in the department, and the timetable would be heavily weighted to supporting the Consultant operating lists in theatre.
The post would therefore deliver a large amount of surgical exposure, and it would be expected that the post-holder would be able to significantly increase their experience in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The post-holder would receive surgical training appropriate to their level of experience. On-call/Full Shift duties The post requires the occupant to provide non-resident on call services, as part of the OMFS middle grade on call rota, providing in-patient and emergency cover for the units at Rotherham General Hospital and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The on call shifts are shared with the three Specialty Registrars at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the Registrar at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, as well as two Clinical Fellows who provide weekend cover.
The on call frequency is 1 in 5 weekdays, and 1 in 7 weekends. The post-holder is required to be have a full driving licence and to be able to travel between sites when on call. The on call commitment would be fully supported by the OMFS Consultants on call at both sites. The post-holder would not be expected to operate at a level about that of a day one Specialty Registrar.
General Clinical Governance 1. In conjunction with Consultant colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met. Any Other Duties 2. Any other duties as deemed appropriate.
