Northampton, United Kingdom Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust Full time

Applications are invited for this newly created haematology consultant post, to join a well-established and cohesive Macmillan Haematology Unit at NGH. This new post has been approved to support further service development for the future. The department provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory haematology service for the acute trust and primary care, and manages inpatients with a full range of haematological conditions (excluding ALL and aplastic anaemia) to BCSH Level 2b (2010). The Unit has been accredited for autologous transplantation by JACIE. The trust is a cancer centre and is part of the East Midlands Cancer Clinical Network. NGH is linked to Oxford haemophilia centre for comprehensive care.

Five consultant haematologists deliver care across primary and secondary care and are supported by a high functioning team, including 2 NTN specialist registrars, 2 FY/IMT trainees, and additional two non-training middle grades and a physician associate. We have recently expanded the team of clinical nurse specialists, including 3 dedicated CNS for Leukaemia, Myeloma, and Lymphoma, and 0.6 WTE stem cell transplant CNS, 0.6 WTE haemoglobinopathy CNS and 1.8 WTE blood transfusion CNS), this in addition to our team of nurses in haematology clinic and day unit. There is excellent laboratory support and a skilled team of anticoagulant and DVT nurses.

NGH NHS Trust is a large (750 beds) district hospital providing a full range of acute services for a population of around 380,000. A new building housing an interventional cardiology centre, an inpatient renal unit, and the nuclear medicine/nuclear cardiology department was opened in 2008 and a new day surgery facility opened in 2012. A Primary Care Streaming Centre and an Acute Assessment Hub for non-elective admissions were developed and opened respectively in 2017 and 2018, adjacent to A&E. The Macmillan Haematology Unit was extended and completely refurbished in a joint project funded by Macmillan and NGH NHS Trust, completed in 2012. The oncology chemotherapy unit has also completed refurbishment this year. In addition, a new purpose-built Emergency Assessment Bay (EAB) for haematology and oncology emergencies opened in 2018 and is available 24 hours per day (expansion from an existing 9-5 facility located in Oncology outpatients).

To have a special interest in one of the major branches of Haematology would be expected. An interest in haematological malignancy is essential and an interest in haemoglobinopathy would be desirable, however it is not essential.

To share responsibility for the clinical haematology service including liaison with clinicians, other hospital staff and general practitioners in the diagnosis and management of haematological disorders.

To provide continuing responsibility for patients in their charge and in partnership with colleagues working for the proper function of the department.

To share responsibility for the diagnostic services with the other Consultant Haematologists including the day to day responsibility of diagnostic tests and interpretation as required.

To participate with the other Consultant Haematologists in the management of the department.

To demonstrate a firm commitment to clinical governance including participation in effective clinical, medical records and laboratory audit and continuing medical education. Clinical audit staff and systems are available in the Trust. Support of junior staff in governance and audit is encouraged.
