Locum Consultant Trauma

The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics at the Princess Royal University Hospital, a division of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is looking for enthusiastic and committed Trauma & Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon.
The post holder will support existing foot and ankle services within the orthopaedic department but will also be expected to develop the unit. There will be a commitment to providing the full range of elective foot & ankle services to the surrounding region encompassing south-east London and Kent. A multi-disciplinary approach is applied to the management of a wide range of conditions including lower limb trauma. Fragility fractures of the lower limb represent a significant amount of the trauma workload and there is a requirement for the post holder to be actively involved in the management of complex lower limb trauma in this cohort of elderly patients.

1. To provide support and delivery of orthopaedic trauma care for adult and paediatric patients.
2. To provide and support delivery of elective orthopaedic foot and ankle services in line with the department’s needs.
3. To work alongside the existing orthopaedic team to provide comprehensive integrated care in both the elective and emergency setting.
4. To be an integral part of the wider trauma team including general, vascular and urology surgical teams.
5. To organise, guide and promote the dialogue and cooperate with any other subspeciality surgeon in the process of decision making and emergency surgery.
6. To be responsible for the day-to-day management of elective and trauma and elective patients on the wards.
7. To contribute to subspecialty training. The consultant will be expected to supervise, govern, cooperate with, instruct, teach doctors at SCF, SpR, JCF, SHO, F1/F2 level in their clinical work and audit activity of the unit. The Department is proactively involved with student teaching and regular student teaching is mandatory for the postholder.
8. To contribute to the on call rota on a regular basis (weekdays 1:12 and 1:12 weekends (Friday to Sunday).
9. To undertake regular elective weekend operating lists if deemed necessary by service requirements.
10. The post holder is expected to attend relevant MDT meetings.
11. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
12. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
13. Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the Care Group Leads.
14. To lead departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework and foster relations with the research team at Denmark Hill site to manage national level research projects.
15. To contribute to the Audit Programme.
16. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Division’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
17. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for surgical services.
18. To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
