Your New role

At National Highways, we’re looking for a Structures Inspector to join our team based in the South West. As a Structures Inspector you’ll be responsible for completing inspections of non-complex assets, in line with agreed inspections schedules, proceduresand standards, raise appropriate works and undertake checks on the quality and quantity of maintenance work. You’ll collect data to inform prioritisation and development of maintenance schemes.
- The role will have on-call duty responsibilities and you will be required to drive as part of your role and will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employment._

What you’ll be leading on
- Deliver cyclical and ad-hoc inspections of non-complex highway assets, identify defects, defect causes and options for remedial actions.
- Document asset condition and all inspection findings, including special inspections and testing, in relevant systems in line with agreed data capture and management standards, and ensure asset data is up to date and correct at all times.
- Input into the development of inspections programme and provide support to Senior Inspectors and Inspection Manager in the associated detailed planning activities. For example, arranging road space, creating orders for suppliers, producing specificationsfor the procurement of monitoring, investigation, testing and other special inspections of structures.
- Liaise with engineering teams and support the development of maintenance and investment plans and prioritisation by ensuring adequate information is gathered.
- Complete reports, technical drawings and studies to support inspection findings and asset condition information management.
- Report and raise works for any safety critical issues and proactively manage high priority defects.
- Be available for on-duty responsibilities, attending incident sites and providing advice.
- Carry out timely inspections of reactive asset repairs and escalate any cause for concern such as works delays and/or reoccurring quality issues.
- Provide input to network performance reviews to understand performance trends, identify risks, analyse root causes for performance issues and help suggest remedial action plans.

To be Successful
- Qualified to or working towards HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent,
- Qualified as an Inspector on the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (NHSS31) or working towards qualification with demonstrable evidence of the core competencies required.
- Experience of undertaking inspections with knowledge of the defects and maintenance needs of highways assets.
- Good understanding of Health & Safety implication of working on high-speed roads.
- Understanding of network management practice and approach, with awareness of the CDM Regulations appropriate to highway maintenance works.
- Understanding and experience in using asset management databases.
- Capable of managing a personal work load to achieve programming targets within time and financial constraints.
