Would you like to make a difference to safety at sea?
Are you a master mariner?
If so, we would love to hear from you
This is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to move onto the next step in their marine industry career and who has the passion to not only make a difference but seek solutions in order to make continuous improvements to safety at sea.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is responsible for investigating accidents and incidents involving UK vessels anywhere in the world.
**We are currently recruiting for three Inspector of Marine Accident roles: Nautical (this role), Engineering (job search reference 274472) and Naval Architect (job search reference 274466).**
**Job description**:
Based in Southampton, the MAIB is an independent organisation within the Department for Transport, responsible for investigating accidents and incidents involving UK vessels anywhere in the world, and any vessels within UK territorial waters.
The sole aim of these investigations is improving the safety of life at sea and the avoidance of accidents in future. The branch is not responsible for apportioning blame or liability, nor does it enforce laws or carry out prosecutions.
The MAIB comprises 41 specialist and administrative staff. Inspectors are divided into four teams each headed by a principal inspector. The successful applicant will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of inspectors responsible for investigating a wide range of marine casualties, wherever they occur worldwide, to determine their circumstances and causes.
Please visit the MAIB website to find out more about our organisation.
Two inspectors at Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), Emma and Jack, discuss the role of inspector and their experience of working at MAIB.
Transport accident investigation is a specialist role and we will provide comprehensive external and in-house training in accident investigation, leading to a recognised qualification. On completion of this training your remit will include:
- Deploying to accident sites as part of a team to support or lead investigations;
- Interviewing witnesses and collecting a wide variety of evidence;
- Completing detailed analysis in order to identify safety issues and draft recommendations;
- Writing and contributing to investigation reports, safety bulletins and safety digests;
- Presenting MAIB reports at inquests and fatal accident inquiries;
- Providing in-house nautical expertise;
- Representing the MAIB at industry working groups and other safety fora.
In addition to specialist training courses, you will maintain currency with the latest maritime technical developments relevant to your role and represent the MAIB externally in these matters.
**Special Features of the Role**
Your commitment to deploy will be managed through a duty system whereby 4 duty teams rotate through a weekly cycle. During your duty week you will need to be available to travel to accident sites at 2 hours’ notice. The following week (standby) you will be at 6 hours’ notice to fill in for or assist the duty team if it is deployed. For weeks 3 and 4 of the cycle you will be expected to be contactable and available to deploy unless otherwise agreed. Duty rosters are published well in advance to enable you to plan ahead, and flexibility is possible to accommodate important family events and other commitments.
**Person specification**:
**About You**
You will be highly motivated and assertive, inquisitive and a critical thinker. You will need to be physically fit and capable of working in disrupted environments and must be able to work under pressure both as part of a team and independently. You will require considerable diplomatic skills and be able to engage colleagues and external stakeholders in the discussion of new, unfamiliar or controversial concepts.
You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be capable of producing accurate and clear written reports to challenging deadlines and have good presentation skills. You must also be computer literate.
**You must hold**:
- STCW 95 II/2 (Deck) Unlimited and command experience afloat;
- A full driving licence valid in the UK.
**Particular experience we are looking for**:
- Working in an environment where delivery of evidence-based output, based on structured analytical techniques, has been a primary requirement;
- Leading a team to solve a complex and/or multi-disciplinary problem,
