LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITAL NHS TRUST JOB DESCRIPTION JOB DETAILS Job Title: Junior Clinical Fellows in Emergency Medicine Grade: Clinical Fellow (CT1/CT2 equivalent) Specialty/Department: Emergency Specality Medicine Location: SJUH/LGI This post is for a Junior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine. This is a whole time/part time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This post is 80% clinical and 20% non-clinical. The culture and behaviours in ED are well known to be grounded firmly on the principle that the workforce is the single most valuable asset.

This is demonstrated on a continuous basis by attitudes and behaviours which are supportive, helpful, non - blaming and friendly. The team approach is completely embedded in the department and all staff are wholly focused on providing a fast and effective patient service. We currently have 24/7 Consultant on shop floor at Leeds General Infirmary ( MTC) and 16/7 Hrs Consultant at St James University Hospital. The Non clinical time is built into the job to deliver various projects on going in the departments.

The department sees approximately 40,000 children a year and has 12 cubicle spaces. There are 2 dedicated resus bays and a further bay which can be adapted for use by children. We run paediatric returns clinics 3 days a week. At times of peak demand there is a minor injury unit which is jointly staffed by ENPs and medical staff.

A Paediatric Assessment Unit at the LGI is currently open, providing an ambulatory care model and sees all GP referrals direct. Leeds is a designated paediatric trauma centre for the region offering an opportunity for those interested in pre hospital and trauma management to expand their repertoire. In the last two years the Paediatric ED has introduced ketamine sedation and the use of LAT gel for painful procedures in children. The Department provides excellent opportunities for developing your clinical skills; the department trains the ST3s in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and we are a designated centre for HST training.

Emergency Department (ED) Both Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH) provide emergency services for adults. Adult medicine and GI services are provided at the St Jamess site. Paediatrics, Cardiology, Stroke Medicine, Vascular Surgery and Major Trauma and related services are based at the Leeds General Infirmary. The ED at Leeds General Infirmary is attended by 110,000 patients a year and is in a modern block, housing ICUs, theatres and interventional cardiology.

The ED has a resuscitation room with six bays and 25 majors cubicles. The Leeds Major Trauma Centre is one of the largest in the country with some of the best outcome data as judged by the independent UK TARN database. It is one of only 12 to provide both adult and paediatric major trauma care on the same site. Inpatient care is based around a Major Trauma Ward which, along with intensive care, theatres and interventional radiology, is based in the same building as the ED (Jubilee Wing).

The MTC runs a regular Trauma Team Leadership course and has weekly multi-disciplinary mortality and morbidity meetings. The ED at St Jamess has been refurbished with expansion of the resuscitation room to five bays and of the majors area to a total of 29 cubicles. Approximately 90,000 patients a year attend this ED. Both EDs have minor injury areas, adjacent to the main department, staffed by Emergency Nurse Practitioners until 10pm at the earliest.

Both departments have active Clinical Decision Units. The Emergency Medicine consultants are responsible for patients undergoing protocoled, assessment, treatment or observation. The CDU service has been nationally recognised as innovative and high quality. The Emergency Departments have a combined follow-up clinic held in a purpose-built area.

The Emergency Departmental records are computerised, facilitating collection of data for statistics, audit and information useful in planning future service provision. The Emergency Departments in Leeds are innovative and have developed new roles and ways of working. For example, Consultants in Elderly Medicine work in the St Jamess ED for several sessions during the week and the Directorate has developed the Advanced Practitioner role. We have over 50 consultants in the Emergency Department with a wide range of clinical, educational, and managerial interests.
