We offer a unique and exciting opportunity for ambitious PhD-level graduates to undertake innovative research as part of a collaborative team that will require interactions between three universities and FDB (a leading contract development and manufacturing organisation partner that offers complete solutions in biopharmaceutical manufacturing - from pre-clinical investigations and process development to commercial cGMP production). The programme involves the partners working together to address challenges and opportunities in bioprocessing, interacting on specific workpackages involving molecular cell biology of the cell factories, analytical characterisation of products, ‘omics characterisation of processes and their control linked together to processing and predictive modelling of the system.

The EPSRC website defines Prosperity Partnerships as - “funding opportunities that aim to fund business-led research that arises from an industrial need, with the work being co-delivered between the business and academic partners. The opportunity is aimed at supporting excellent, world leading fundamental research which has clear benefit to the businesses involved, resulting in accelerated impact arising from the new knowledge, innovations, or technologies” and that
- The research challenges to be addressed in the Prosperity Partnership should:

- be relevant to stimulating innovation aimed at tackling major problems faced by the UK and the world
- drive capability in key technologies and scientific advancements

The overall Strategic Partnership with FDB

FDB announced the inception of the “FDB Centre of Excellence in Bioprocessing 2.0.” (CEB) in January 2019, led and funded by FDB, in partnership with three leading academic institutions - the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester and York - and support for integration and training provided by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) based in Glasgow. The CEB initiative was jointly defined by FDB and CEB Partners to address challenges and opportunities in bioprocessing for the development and manufacture of recombinant biopharmaceuticals and gene therapies.
