**Job description**:
**Economics Group**
The Economics Group in the Treasury provide Ministers with analysis and assessment of fast-paced economic developments in the UK economy and advises on their implications for the Government’s economic strategy. It works with policy teams to factor economic analysis into advice for Ministers on a wide range of polices. And the Group is a leading member of the UK macroeconomic community, collaborating with the Bank, OBR and academia on shared topics of interest, liaising with international organisations in their surveillance of the UK economy and supporting the economic and social research professions across government departments.
The **Labour Markets, Human Capital, Supply and Regions (LHSR) team** is at the centre of the Treasury’s function as an economics Ministry, providing economic analysis, briefing and policy advice on key trends in the UK economy. We lead analysis of the latest developments in supply, labour markets, population, regions and human capital, and deliver high-quality analysis to inform policy advice. The team works flexibly across branches and priorities. We are a friendly, inclusive and supportive team, and work closely and collaboratively with colleagues across the department and across government.
**Assistant Economist - Labour market Branch**
We deliver and communicate high-quality economic analysis on the UK labour market, including, employment, unemployment, inactivity and wage growth. This post offers the opportunity to work independently on short-term demands including briefing and surveillance, alongside long-term strategic projects. The post holder will be responsible for delivering high quality analysis on a high-profile area, working closely with other analysts and policy colleagues across the Treasury as well as external stakeholders. We are looking for a hardworking and proactive individual with strong economics skills, as well as a willingness to build-up expertise on labour economics.
**Key Accountabilities for this role include**:
- Delivering impactful and timely briefing and analytical products for ministers and senior officials on labour market outcomes, including, employment, unemployment, inactivity and wage growth.
- Analysing the economic impacts of labour market policies and communicating conclusions to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) as well as stakeholders across HMT in order to influence the policy-making process.
- Analysing new trends, risks and developing assessments of their implications, summarising key messages to contribute to the Department’s monitoring of the state of the economy and the outlook. This includes interpreting labour market trends in the context of going challenges in headline labour market statistics.
- Matrix managing junior analysts in the team, including direct line management of a student economist, supporting their development and role modelling analytical best practice.
- You will also be supported to contribute to the corporate agenda in the Economics Group and wider department.
