**Introduction**

The Medical Exposures Group (MEG) is based within the Radiation Assessments Department of the Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards Directorate. MEG is a multi-disciplinary group of clinically trained staff from each of the radiological modalities: diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy.

The remit of the group is to improve patient safety, relating to the hazards of medical exposure involving ionising radiation, in the clinical setting with the objectives to:

- Provide relevant up to date advice on safe clinical practice, radiation protection issues and regulatory matters to protect the patient from the risks associated with ionising radiation
- Provide independent advice and support for unintended and accidental medical exposures to ionising radiation
- Collate, analyse and share learning from UK radiation incidents and near miss data from medical exposures to mitigate these events
- Provide advice to UK government departments and agencies, UK regulators, international organisations, professional bodies, healthcare professionals and members of the public to improve patient safety
- Develop national and international guidance and liaise with professional organisations to ensure there is consistency and clarity in the advice given
- Support a risk-based approach to improving patient safety in medical exposures, including the support of fitness open assessments for clinical departments

**Job description**:
**About the Role**

The post holder will provide authoritative up-to-date advice on matters associated with clinical practice in diagnostic imaging and associated radiation protection issues. This will include advice associated with regulatory matters pertaining to the use of ionising radiation in healthcare, in particular, IR(ME)R.

The post holder will need to be able to identify quality and safety improvement initiatives in diagnostic imaging practice which can be promulgated across the UK. In close association with their line manager, they will provide advice to diagnostic imaging departments, undertake the analysis of incidents, share learning from these events and help develop, with the professions, guidance on good and safe practice.

In the event of an emergency the post holder will be required to have a role in environmental or radiation incident response and recovery.

**Main duties and responsibilities**

The post holder will:

- Provide up-to-date independent expert advice on matters associated with diagnostic imaging and related radiation protection issues to service users
- Provide input into radiation protection issues relating to own area of practice to promote and improve patient safety in the clinical environment
- Act as an independent source of advice to patients and members of the public on matters concerning ionising radiation use in medicine
- Liaise with national and international stakeholders to include patients, healthcare professionals, professional bodies associated with diagnostic imaging, government bodies, inspectorates for IR(ME)R for the devolved administrations and members of the public on matters pertaining to their field of expertise
- Support and advice to inspectors during inspections on the implementation of IR(ME)R in clinical practice as required
