News & Features Writer - Contract

We need a News & Features Writer to provide additional writing capacity to allow us to deliver best-in-class public awareness material. You will be responsible for elevating our ability to deliver powerful news and features to our target audience, playing an early role in the growth of Our Future Health’s editorial function.
We’re at the start of an incredible journey. Our Future Health is committed to building a resource that truly reflects the UK population so that we can identify differences in how diseases begin and progress in people from different backgrounds. There are big challenges in privacy, security and processing data. We’re harnessing both genetic and clinical data to create the most detailed picture we’ve ever had of people’s health.
**What you’ll be doing**:
- Writing stories that capture the essence of Our Future Health. Stories will span a range of styles and formats, including news stories, features, case studies, 1st person ghosts, and audio/video scripts.
- Conducting interviews for quotation and/or background research.
- Performing research on different topics.
- Analysing and interpreting findings by breaking down data.
- Uncovering relevant newsworthy stories.
- Ensuring your pieces are accurate, informative, and written with our audience’s needs in mind.
- Contributing to content idea generation for publication.
- Staying up-to-date with local, national and international affairs.
- Working with the Communications teams to research and write news and feature content.
- Pitching ideas for content in line with our overall editorial plan
- Developing a deep understanding of our forums and creating feature content that brings the best of our community’s conversations to a wider audience.
- Building an audience for our content by promoting it via onsite, offsite and social media channels.
**Requirements**:
To succeed you will have some of the following skills and experience:
- Proven work experience as a news and features writer or reporter.
- Demonstrable portfolio of published articles.
- Dextrous across a range of reporting and writing styles, including factual news and feature interviews.
- Computer proficiency (MS Office, digital editing, web search and databases).
- Excellent writing skills in English.
- Ability to follow strict deadlines and fact-check information.
- Good observation skills.
- Thorough understanding of journalistic and publishing law.
- Broad knowledge of headline best practice.
- Degree in journalism, communications or relevant field.
- The ability to travel to different locations across the UK (approximately 1 day per week).
