We’re looking for an enthusiastic and passionate freshwater ecologist to help create, analyse and report data on the ecological health of the aquatic environment in the East Midlands. - You will carry out a range of tasks, including: - Analysing invertebrates samples - Taking invertebrate and chemistry samples - Assisting on plant and fish surveys - Using a range of databases to enter and extract data - Analysing data and writing reports Training in survey techniques and identification will be available, although some experience is desirable. - We work flexibly but you will need to carry out laboratory and field-based duties as required. You will therefore work in our Trentside laboratory in Nottingham to sort and identify invertebrate samples, which will form the majority of your workload. You will also be involved in fieldwork across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. At other times you may have the opportunity to work from home. - Participation in incident response is very much encouraged, including drought, pollution and flooding. We have a flexible range of roles you can volunteer for and you’ll get all the training and support you need. If successful your line manager will discuss arrangements with you depending on your role and circumstances. The team - Analysis & Reporting are a friendly and inclusive team of ecologists who provide a vital service in collecting, analysing and interpreting biological and water quality data. Our work includes water chemistry, ecology and fisheries. We turn data into evidence to support the Environment Agency’s responsibilities in environmental management and in its ambition to create a better place. Experience/skills required - You will be qualified to at least ‘A’ level and have a minimum of two years’ experience in a relevant discipline (e.g. ecology, environmental sciences, biology). This experience can have been gained in a voluntary capacity. You may have the opportunity to gain qualifications as part of our apprenticeship scheme. You will be able to demonstrate experience of: - Identification of macroinvertebrates - Data analysis and interpretation - Ecological survey work Experience using Excel and Word is essential. You need to be able to work effectively on your own and within a team and be able to produce clear written work. - You must have a clean driving licence. - You will be willing to undertake specialist training when necessary.
