About AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca is a global, science-led biopharmaceutical company, developing innovative medicines that benefit millions of patients worldwide. Our internship programs provide hands-on experience in cutting-edge research, allowing students to contribute meaningfully while developing their skills in a collaborative environment.

About the Centre for AI Team

In the Centre for AI department we are transforming the future of healthcare by unlocking the power of AI-powered science for people, society and the planet. Your role will be in the Machine Perception team, where we are supporting the delivery of new medicines by leveraging advanced AI methodology on large scale datasets consisting of thousands and even millions of medical images. We regularly work with the state of the art models in Computer Vision such as foundational imaging models as well as developing our own novel architectures in this field. During this internship you will investigate a critical unsolved problem in medical deep learning: domain shift. You will explore methods to quantify and combat model performance degradation as a result of shifting data sources, leading to improved generalisation. Throughout the internship you will gain experience working with and learning from AI researchers at the frontier of medical AI development.

Accountabilities
- Conduct a literature review of topics relevant to the internship including medical Computer Vision, foundational imaging models and domain adaptation techniques
- Leverage publicly available models for automatic segmentation of sturctures in medical images using Python/PyTorch
- Leverage multiple publicly available medical data sources for developing potentially novel domain adaptation techniques
- Communicate research findings to the rest of the team in a concise and understandable manner

Essential Skills/Experience
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Physics, Engineering or a related quantitative field.
- Strong proficiency in Python for developing deep learning models in either PyTorch or TensorFlow (PyTorch preferred)
- Experience working on Computer Vision projects
- Excellent English written/communication skills and teamworking skills

Desired Skills/Experience
- Experience handling medical images (especially DICOM and NIFTI) and training neural networks on images. Experience with 3D images or videos is a bonus
- Experience with domain adaptation in machine learning - for example, fine-tuning models using a variety of datasets, combatting noisy data.

Additional Information:
Applications are now open until 28/02/2025. Start date 23/06/25 - 19/09/2025 and you can expect to hear from us by the end of March 2025.
