The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.
A major programme of change to LSHTM’s education provision is now underway and a key pillar of this programme of change is to decolonise the curriculum. The postholder’s primary role will be supporting teaching staff to decolonise learning and teaching. The postholder will be instrumental in ensuring that decolonisation is a fundamental aspect of LSHTM’s approach to education provision. They will bring a passion for decolonising learning and teaching and experience of successfully embedding anti-racist/decolonial methods and principles.
The role is based in the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), a vibrant team of education specialists working across the School to promote teaching excellence, learning innovation and student engagement. Based in the Academic Professional Development team, the postholder will work closely with staff and students to progress LSHTM’s ambitions for decolonising the curriculum. They will work closely with Decolonising the Curriculum Facilitators (currently 10), who are academic staff working in the faculties with additional responsibility for championing decolonisation and supporting colleagues to decolonise their learning and teaching practices.
The post holder will play a significant role in supporting a change programme of decolonising learning and teaching at LSHTM, contributing to a community of practice around decolonising learning and teaching and embedding the student voice in the School’s approach to decolonisation. The role is focused on providing advice and support for initiatives designed to decolonise learning and teaching, including: the Decolonising the Curriculum Toolkit, a self-reflection tool for academic staff, continuing professional development activities for LSHTM staff, student engagement with decolonising learning and teaching, and evaluation. The role holder will also contribute to the broader professional development activities within CELT.
The CELT is a recently established centre at LSHTM and we are looking for an inspirational and credible academic developer with strong influencing skills. The postholder will need to be creative, committed, and self-motivated with knowledge of decolonising learning and teaching, issues pertaining to inclusion in education and experience of providing educational development support to academic staff.
