Personal Assistants (Support Workers) have the most important role within ENABLE Scotland by making a positive difference every day to the lives of the people we support. No two days are the same for our Personal Assistants but what we can guarantee is that you will be supporting someone with a learning disability to achieve their goals and outcomes - whatever they may be

Each person we support has different support needs, so your role as Support Worker may include assisting them with various aspects of personal care, moving and handling or positive behavioural support whilst expanding their social networks and connections.

ENABLE Scotland creates a bespoke team around every individual we support, and our team of Personal Assistants work collaboratively to ensure the safety, wellbeing and aspirations of the people we support are met.

Let us introduce you to **Gary**:
Gary required 1:1 support at all times, staff who support Gary complete a sleepover shift in which between the hours of 11:00-07:00 staff will retire to their bed in the sleepover room and resume support at 07:00 however if Gary requires support during the night staff must support him. Gary is a wheelchair user and depends on the support of staff for all aspects of care. Gary receives medication, financial, domestic social and personal care support. It is essential for Gary to have a personal assistant who has a good sense of humour and will engage in his jokes as Gary likes to pretend he is stealing things from staff like their breakfast as this amuses him. Gary requires a personal assistant who is patient and understand as at times Gary can disengage with staff and he will take some time to come round so staff must be patient and encourage and motivate Gary to engage.

Gary has a favourite programme and he watches this every morning on his iPad, he will often sing and clap along with staff. Gary enjoys watching a variety of videos on YouTube and will do this throughout the day. Gary previously enjoyed hydrotherapy swimming and going bowling with staff however has not done this since the pandemic and Gary would love to get back to doing these things. Gary also previously went on holidays to the caravan park and this is something he hopes to achieve this year with the support of his Enable team.

Sadly, it’s not always possible for Gary to enjoy what many people would consider these ‘simple pleasures’ without proper, dedicated support.
