NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development. About the role **Hear From the Hiring Manager** - "This position is a regional position between Berkeley and Oldbury Site, situated approximately 7 miles apart. Berkeley Site covers 27 hectares of special scientific interest on the bank of the River Severn that finished generating in 1989 and is currently in the decommissioning phase. Oldbury site ceased generating in 2012 and is recently entered into the decommissioning phase. Oldbury Site is situated adjacent to the Severn Estuary, which has numerous environmental designations and a rich variety of local habitats._ - Priorities for both Sites now include removing all legacy wastes, emptying the active waste vaults and demolition and deconstruction of the majority of the buildings and facilities to ultimately return the site back to green field and re-use._ - As such the Sites have a range of environmental interests from:_ - _Advising projects on best available techniques in the design and build of new plant and processes to aid in the demolition of existing buildings and removal of waste streams._ - _Ensuring the ongoing effectiveness of the environmental management system._ - _Ensuring compliance with our Environmental Permit through ongoing oversight, assessment, review, reporting and regulatory engagement on our radiological discharges._ - _Developing and driving environmental understanding within teams, ensuring good environmental awareness and practices across the site._ - _Improving the biodiversity of the wider land-holding around Site._ - The role of an Environmental Specialist requires the individual to take a strong lead directly with the decommissioning activities and project teams, and to instruct and lead on environmental standards, expectations and requirements to maintain good practices and compliance with all relevant regulations. As such you will be expected to have a high level of professionalism, integrity and drive, be highly motivated, proactive and be able to work independently. You will need to ensure adherence to standards and expectations through good communication and team working with site teams, providing timely advice, influence and ultimately holding groups to account on expected standards._ **_ Please note this role is based onsite at Berkeley site. The contractual hours are Monday to Thursday, 07.25 - 17.00, perfect for someone looking for a four day week._** **Key Deliverables** - Provide authoritative advice, support and guidance to the Site and Project teams to ensure compliance with company Standards and relevant regulations. - Monitor performance and provide advice as necessary to maintain and improve environmental standards. - Support the Site and Projects in identifying, developing and documenting Best Available Techniques (BAT). - Deputise for the line manager as appropriate. - Ensure the production and maintenance of any required permits, reports, consents and other regulatory requirements, as required. - Implement identified good practice and promote and deploy across Site. - Contribute to the effective development of, and deliver, training within own area of specialism. **Qualifications & Experience** - Member of a relevant professional institute (essential). - Certificate in Environmental Management (essential). - Lead Auditor for ISO 14001 (desirable). - Holding or working towards a certification as Radioactive Waste Advisor (desirable). You will be joining a team of environmental advisors and engineers, led by the Heads of Radiological Protection and Environment, and form part of the wider Environment, Health, Safety, Security & Quality (EHSS&Q) function on the Sites. No previous nuclear experience is necessary as
