We are currently recruiting for Band 5 Support Team Leader to join our fast paced and dynamic Microbiology team. This role is part of a team which provides an efficient and effective Microbiology service to two general hospitals (Southend University/Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital Trusts) and local GP community.

Support Team Leader is expected to organise and manage pre and post analytical support at the hub and accountable for delivery of high-quality services against agreed quality standards and key performance indicators. Support Team Leader will supervise the support team at the hub, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the pre and post analytics section. They will work independently and propose/implement changes to procedures for own area of work and to perform all designated duties within Pathology in accordance with local working practices, to maintain high personal standards and conform to Health and Safety regulations. Support Team Leader is expected to continue with personal development through academic or practical experience. Applicants must currently have permission to work in the UK.

**Duties**:

- To plan and prioritise the delivery of pre and post analytics activities across the laboratory, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, rostering, responding appropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities.
- To propose and implement changes to standard operating procedures as required to develop and streamline the service or to reflect other changes.
- To perform e rostering attendance management daily.
- To be responsible for staff management of department, including:

- Recruitment and induction of new staff
- Performance management, including appraisals and management of conduct and performance issues
- Sickness absence management
- Ensuring compliance with statutory and mandatory training within department
- To provide comprehensive training and competency assessments
- Provide constructive feedback regarding individual staff performance
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant SYNLAB policies and procedures
- To ensure department is always appropriately staffed, ensuring there are appropriate arrangements for rostering, approval of leave and other planned absences, approval of timesheets.
- To be responsible for ensuring all staff including casual staff, work experience & trainees are trained appropriately & training records are maintained, ensuring the correct PPE is always worn. To update, identify & implement any development needs, organising team resources to successfully achieve goals & objectives.
- To be responsible for authorising annual leave for staff ensuring the area is always adequately staffed. Ensuring all staff annual leave is current considering length of service & contract changes.
- To be responsible for compiling the weekly, evening, weekend & Bank Holiday duty rotas and to ensure service needs are met and to inform laboratory staff as appropriate.
- To be accountable for pre-analytical sample handling, distribution, aliquoting, referral, storage, and disposal of samples, and prioritising and immediate dispatch of urgent requests & other time critical tasks.
- To actively participate in Internal audits along with a lead auditor and to assist in recording the audit information.
- To be responsible for monitoring and maintaining equipment & working area of the section and taking any appropriate actions such as maintenance and arranging repairs.
- To perform any additional duties consistent with the grade and description of the post as may be required
- To undertake any training, courses etc as deemed appropriate.
- Prepare samples for routine and specialist biomedical investigations, working on own initiative to agreed protocols.
- Be able to rotate through all designated areas of Pathology, as required (dependent on experience and training), performing all designated duties in accordance with local working practices whilst maintaining high personal standards and conforming to Health and Safety regulations.
- Participate in and assist with clinical trials, particularly in sample receipt and preparation.

**Qualifications and Experience**:

- IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part II, or relevant level 5 qualification, or equivalent experience gained in a medical laboratory
- Proven experience and knowledge of laboratory pre and post analytical and referral process
- Experience of managing a group of staff
- Attendance management skills
