- Job summary
AXIS International Insurance pricing team is closely aligned to the divisional underwriting structure, providing embedded support to each of the underwriting units. The team provides analytical capability in pricing and exposure modelling in respect of all business written through the International Division.
An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead analytical support for our fast-growing Portfolio Programs unit. The unit has a broad remit for developing a multi-class fast-follow portfolio across the London Market. This can range from portfolios of niche products and coverages acting as nurseries for new products at Axis, to efficient underwriting through bespoke multi-class market portfolios. Portfolio analysis is a cornerstone for successful implementation of this strategy, which presents a unique prospect for a pricing actuary to have a direct impact on a growing business whilst getting exposure to a broad range of products across the market.
Specific responsibilities of the role include:
- Actuarial due diligence on each new portfolio, including profitability assessment, portfolio calibration, risk appetite assessment, and rate setting.
- Coordinate analysis across multiple products by utilising tools and resources across the broader pricing team.
- Ongoing monitoring of each portfolio and timely recommendation of changes needed in rates and portfolio composition to keep within profit targets and risk appetite.
- Work closely with underwriters and brokers in initial onboarding and ongoing monitoring of each portfolio. Be a thought partner for the underwriting team.
- Leverage the full depth and breadth of data from each portfolio to enhance broader understanding at Axis of market profitability and trends in each product area.
- Business plan support for the unit including loss ratio analysis, capital allocation, and P&L review.
This role also offers the opportunity to get involved in many cross-divisional pricing initiatives and work alongside different areas of the business.
Qualifications and Experience
- 5+ years’ experience in a non-life actuarial role with exposure to a broad range of classes.
- London Market and pricing backgrounds are highly desired, but not essential.
- Fellow of the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries or equivalent professional body.
- First Class or 2:1 university degree.
Technical skills
- Competent user of Excel, Word and PowerPoint. An advantage will be demonstration of skills and experience of database management and statistical packages, e.g., SQL, R, Python, and VBA.
- Expert understanding of standard reserving and pricing methods.
- Strong analytical capabilities including, thoroughness, attention to detail, and robust numeracy skills.
- Keen to further technical and market knowledge through own research and CPD.
Soft skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to establish credibility and rapport with underwriters, actuaries, management, and brokers.
- Translation of results of analytical work into opinion and recommendations.
- Ability to strike the right balance between objective actuarial opinion and being a thought partner to the business.
- Diligent self-starter, proactive, and a quick learner. Willing to question and investigate.
- Ability to multi-task and manage conflicting priorities.
