Principal Strategic Highways Maintenance Engineer

This is an exciting new role within the Strategic Highways Maintenance Team. We are one of several teams within the Highways Maintenance Group and are responsible for planned highway maintenance work covering carriageways, footways, highway drainage and winter maintenance.
The Principal Strategic Highways Maintenance Engineer will assist the Team Manager while supporting the rest of the team and proving technical support.
You will need to have relevant up to date comprehensive technical knowledge of highways maintenance projects, being able to interpret the issues covered by the team and an awareness of current and emerging best practice, policies, contract administration and legislation. Experience and working knowledge of current Health and Safety practice and legislation, including CDM compliance is essential.
You’ll need the ability to take the lead on major projects, being able to instruct, provide sound technical support, motivation, and guidance across the team, including instructing and advising contractors regarding technical issues. Experience of managing, costing, programming, and managing projects, including the supervision of allocated staff and contractors.
You will require the ability to able to carry out independent research, bringing creativity and innovative solutions to solve problems, create and maintain systems of prioritisation, with consideration regarding budgetary, resource and time constraints.
The following is to provide further information regarding the activities of the team;
- Carriageways - resurfacing and reconstruction, surface dressing, micro asphalt, patching and localised repairs, road markings, high friction and coloured surfacing.
- Footways - preventative maintenance (slurry seal) and footway reconstruction.
- Highway Drainage - investigatory and survey work, gully cleansing, repair and replacement work, scheme work.
- Winter Maintenance - winter gritting.
