Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist - Mental Health

Full time, Permanent

We are delighted to have received funding to create this new, Speech and Language Therapy role within Inpatient Mental Health services in Cornwall. This roles forms part of a wider development of greater AHP presence in our Mental Health services.

There is currently no dedicated SLT provision within Mental Health services. To support the establishment of these new roles, funding has been secured to source specialist supervision and support evaluation of these posts.

This is an excellent opportunity for an innovative, client centred Speech and Language Therapist:

- To develop this role, in close conjunction with the Professional Lead SLT and other new AHP members of the MDT
- To provide a specialist Adult SLT service within the inpatient Mental Health units.
- To manage a caseload of patients, including those with complex communication and/or swallowing needs, using evidence based practice.
- To provide specialist Adult SLT assessment, diagnosis and treatment to adults presenting with diverse presentations and a range of physical, cognitive and/or mental health conditions
- To assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions as an autonomous practitioner, using independence of judgement.
- To liaise with multi-disciplinary teams and relevant care professionals and agencies ensuring that high quality individualised care is delivered which ensures safety, promotes recovery and maximises independence.
- To provide on-going training to the multi-disciplinary teams and other agencies in collaboration with the Mental Health teams and Adult SLT Service.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop and consolidate their clinical skills in this specialist field. This is intended to be a clinically focused role, with a high proportion of patient contact time.

Although this is a stand alone post professional and clinical support is available through the wider Cornish SLT service, alongside external supervision.

Currently, this post is expected to work Monday to Friday. There is the potential, but no specific plan for the team to move to working 7/7 in the future.
