Peer Support Worker
Are you a Peer Support Worker in mental health, or would you like to be? Are you looking to use your lived experience of mental health difficulties to help others? Would you like the opportunity to develop your skills with full training and support?
We are seeking a Peer Support Worker for The Chichester Centre. The service provides inpatient mental health care and treatment in conditions of low security, meaning the wards are locked, and some items are restricted within the unit. Most of the service users have been in touch with the criminal justice system, though not all. All service users are detained under the Mental Health Act, with leave into the community.
The Peer Support Worker roles are a vital part of multidisciplinary teams, and are aimed at people who have lived experience of using mental health care services. We are looking for people who can use their experience of mental distress, recovery and use of peer networks to support and inspire others.
We offer a commitment to staff support, including peer support training and regular supervision. You will be supported by the Trust central Peer Support team, as well as line manager and colleagues. It is an opportunity to gain experience in a secure setting; you will be encouraged and supported to do training and professional development.
The role is for 22.5hrs per week; the working pattern is negotiable.
An informal visit is strongly encouraged for an opportunity to see the environment and meet some of the team.
- To support service users who are overcoming mental health challenges in their journey to recovery and wellbeing
- Utilise your lived experience to support individuals and groups using the service. To listen to the service user’s experience and understand their journey through the service and on to the community.
- To use parts of your recovery story to inspire hope in others where appropriate. To be a positive role model for other people overcoming mental health challenges, other workers and families or carers
- Peer Support workers engage with mental health service users to show empathy, share experience, inspire hope and promote recovery with the aim of assisting individuals to gain and maintain independence in the community
- To plan, promote and support activities in accordance with the service user’s needs to meet goals identified in the individual’s Recovery Plan
The Chichester Centre is a 3-ward (49 bed) unit on the Graylingwell site. There is a full multidisciplinary team for each ward, comprising medical, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology and social work colleagues, as well as a drama therapist and the Peer Support Worker who work across the centre.
The centre is a friendly work environment, and is located near a park and with easy access to shops. The centre is walking distance to Chichester centre, and also offers convenient access to local walks as well as the beach.
Covid-19 full vaccination may be a condition of employment for this role, unless an exemption applies. The successful applicant may have contact with vulnerable service users and we will therefore seek proof of being fully vaccinated during the recruitment process.
See the attached Job Description and Person Specification for the full roles and responsibilities of the post.
