Strategy Officer x 2 roles

The General Medical Council helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them in achieving (and exceeding) those standards and take action when they are not met.

We have two fantastic opportunities to join the Strategy Team on a permanent basis. You’ll work within a dynamic environment and with colleagues across the organisation, as well as external partners. Come and be a valued member in a small, friendly and supportive team that works on a wide range of priority issues.

This is an exciting time to join the team as we embark on the development of our next five-year strategy providing lots of opportunities to consult and engage with GMC staff and external stakeholders. The main areas of work for this role include helping to deliver the current GMC corporate priorities and supporting the coordination of the annual strategic planning event.

You’ll also lead on areas of work that require strategic input and direction, drafting briefings and producing presentations. You’ll work on developing an approach to understanding the external environment, providing strategic insight on our medical workforce agenda and working collaboratively with internal colleagues as well as external stakeholders and partners.

You will need to be comfortable working with senior staff and in an environment where there are often no ‘off the shelf’ answers. You will require enthusiasm, flexibility and initiative, and the ability to work well with others. You will be able to work on complex issues independently, and support discussions on areas that are often multi-faceted, where stakeholders have a range of views.

In return, you’ll benefit from being part of an organisation that is genuinely committed to its people. Within our friendly environment, you will have access to a range of learning and development opportunities designed to support your ongoing progression.

This is a hybrid role based in Manchester or London. You will be required to attend the office you are based in once a week, in addition to a face-to-face team meeting every two months (London or Manchester on an alternate basis). There are also other face-to-face events on an ad-hoc basis.

The GMC is happy to support a range of flexible working options. Flexible working requests will be considered in line with the policy.

You can find more detail on the tasks you will undertake, and the essential skills required for the role, in the job description.

We recommend no more than 2 sides of A4 for the covering letter, but it can be more if required.

We will assess the information you provide against the skills required for the role and let you know whether you will progress to the next stage of the recruitment process.

GMC Benefits - Why work for us

We work with doctors, patients, and other stakeholders to support good, safe patient care across the UK. We set the standards doctors and those who train them need to meet and help them achieve them. If there are concerns these standards may not be met or that public confidence in doctors may be at risk, we can investigate, and take action if needed.

You’ll benefit from being part of an organisation that is genuinely committed to its people with several excellent benefits including:

- 30 days holiday with the option to buy and sell more
- A generous employer pension contribution of 15%
- Access to a range of learning and development opportunities designed to support your ongoing progression
- Flexible working patterns
- Attractive salary that’s reviewed annually
- Discounts at 100s of high street and online stores
- Discounted gym membership
- Private medical insurance
- Employee assistance programme
- Cycle to work scheme for those wanting a greener commute
- Bike lockers and shower facilities

The GMC values diversity and has made a public commitment to processes and procedures that are fair, objective, transparent and free from discrimination. We are also committed to the Disability Confident employer scheme and support the requirements of the Disability Confident interview scheme. If you have a disability and meet the cut-off mark for the essential criteria for this role as outlined in the person specification document, you will be offered an interview.
